BTK Killer Chooses Guilty Plea Over Trial

The accused BTK Killer, so called because of his methods (Bind, Torture and Kill) has opted to plead guilty to 10 counts of murder rather than stand trial.

During the proceedings, the accused, whose real name is Dennis Rader, was by all accounts courteous, casual, and entirely emotionless. His victims were male and female, and ranged in age from 9 years old to 62 years old.

The BTK killer taunted media and police with cryptic messages during a cat-and-mouse game that began after the first murder, in 1974. BTK resurfaced in 2004 after years of silence with a letter to The Wichita Eagle that included photos of a 1986 strangling victim and a photocopy of her missing driver's license.

Rader has been married for 34 years, and has a degree in criminal justice. When asked why he opted to plead guilty, as opposed to going to trial, he stated that a trial would be:

"just a long process. So it's just a mathematical problem. It's guilty."

This gives me chills.

It's only a matter of time and morals before this guy is a McFarlane Toys action figure.

Personally I hope the book, documentry, and film "based on a true story" comes out before the action figure.

That way we can have the action figure modelled on some remotely decent celebrity, complete with minature rope.

He is a criminal psycopath and I don't think that he will ever change.

Empathy is missing from his mind and other people are objects to manipulate without care.

He will be a risk to the public for the rest of his life and he should never be let free.

You're in luck. He won't be.

This whole case was really a reality check for me.. proving that things like this can really happen close to home. It just creeps me out knowing that he lived and worked not far from where my wife, daughters and I do... and held a public service position to boot!

not that i know the guy... but from the A&E documentary it is quite obvious that the term sociopath is very fitting.

even now, turning himself in, pleading guilty, all of this probably fits into some sort of plan. kind of makes you wonder why, after getting away with all those murders, he would turn himself in 20 years later. And that is basically what he did... he provided sudden DNA evidence where non existed before. He did not "accidently" do that... it was calculated.

it sort of reminds me of dahmer being willing to give his brain to science for study. it.'s chilling to realize how little we know about antisocial behaivior and how dangerous that ignorance is.

It's called going down in a media 'free for all'. The attention stopped, he got lonely and wanted more... write a letter, leave some DNA, become infamous, then do what few (or even no) high profile killers have done... plead guilty!

People are all over this. No trial, no creepy testamony, no sick details (well no new ones discussed in court). He ended it before the public got tired of hearing about it, which means a lot of people will be digging around for a long time to get more, more more.

People are a little twisted!

My favorite question with regard to serial killer is whether they ever really chose to become what they are, and if they did then to what degree was it choice and what degree was it circumstance?

It seems to me that often the only way they can stop themselves is to allow themselves to be caught.

Here some headlines about him from The Crime Library:

• BTK Suspect Claims Depression
The man accused of being the BTK serial killer has complained about depression and asked about his family, who have not talked to him since he entered prison, his lawyers say.

• BTK Suspect Waives Preliminary Hearing
BTK suspect, Dennis Rader, waived a preliminary hearing, in essence conceding that prosecutors have sufficent evidence to proceed with a full trial

• BTK Suspect Thanks Church
The man accused of the BTK serial killings wrote a "very generic, very laid-back" letter to his former congregation, thanking church members for their support and asking for their prayers

• BTK Suspect Writes Poems from Prison?
BTK Suspect, Dennis Rader, has apparently written 2 poems bemoaning his situation which have ended up with media outlets

• BTK Suspect Complains About Attorneys
Days before his trial is scheduled to begin, the man suspected of being the BTK strangler called a TV station from jail and complained that his lawyers have not been giving him recent court filings

• BTK Suspect Working on Autobiography
BTK Suspect Dennis Rader was working on a book about his life until authorities found out and cut off contact between him and a woman who was helping him write it

Yeah, someone wants to be acknowledged. puke

its amazing how the media has downplayed his profile- or rather the implications of it. we know he had a degree in criminal justice, was a devout church going "christian" and a church leader, was obsessed with regulations and the sins of others (as an "ordinance enforcer" he was known to go around and measure the length of peoples grass) shot a neighbors dog for no good reason, was obviously a "conservative"--and he looks pretty much just like every other bigoted, middle aged white male ive ever known. hmmm...something tells me that the political climate was just not ripe for a "Prime Time Live" in depth about the self righteous holy rollers that cast judgement on everyone else but are actually psychopaths themselves.

I think this guy is an anomaly.

Not all white middle aged church going men lock kids comfortably in a bathroom while he kills their mother.

The slobbering, wild-eyed, raving-lunatic stereotype of the psychopath is rarely seen in real life. Most of these people are fairly normal in appearance and outward behavior. But inside they are dead. They are completely estranged from the world, while at the same time massive attention whores. They are very cold and matter-of-fact about their activities, but you had better pay attention to them. Perhaps if American pop culture stopped glorifying the serial killer (even as it makes a great public show of gasping in horror at his crimes, secretly wanting to know every sordid detail), we would not be subjected to this kind of thing as often. I qualify that statement with "as often," because human nature being what it is, it's bound to happen sometimes, no matter what. But maybe we should consider putting away our Serial Killer Trading Cards and setting our minds on more worthwhile activities. Just a thought.
