Oprah Drunk With Power

Oprah Winfrey is alleging that she was the victim of racism at the hands of a store's security staff, because she was turned away - when she showed up 15 minutes after the store had closed, and was subsequently refused entry.

The New York Daily News cited sources close to Winfrey as saying the talk show host was first rebuffed by a clerk and then a store manager. The Daily News reported Winfrey had gone to the store to buy a watch for singer Tina Turner, her dining partner that night.

Now...I'm sorry, but does anyone else have a hard time taking her racism allegations seriously when she's crying that she was not allowed to buy a piece of jewellery (for Tina Turner no less), when the store had already closed? I don't care if there was nothing going on at all - the store was closed. It sounds to me like it has all gone to her head, and this whole story is her pouting because she was treated like everyone else for once...and it's also her way of saying "You'll be sorry.... do you KNOW who I AM?"

I guess Oprah isn't well-known in France.

If this was in the States, the people in the store would have recognized her and given her anything she wanted.

Not only was she given a legitimate excuse, but there is a security tape of a guard handing her a business card while explaining that they would be happy if she came back the next day.

Pulling the race card because you couldn't spend several thousand dollars on a watch not only trivializes the lives of people stuggling with real inequality, it pisses in their mouths after drinking bleach.

As a retail worker, I know exactly why she was refused. They were C-L-O-S-E-D.

15 minutes after close or not,

"The New York Post, in its Monday Page Six gossip column, reported she was turned away because the store had been "having a problem with North Africans lately"

if true, the above statement is completely vile.

. . . . . . . . . .

I'm surprised that there IS surprise that she thought she was entitled to entry to the store 15 minutes after close. She's a major celebrity, and no doubt a lot of stores open FOR her, or people like her, common enough I'm sure to make it standard practice.

As a retail worker, I applaud the fact that they turned someone away after close. I hate people who come in and expect me to put my life on hold for them.
mad

As a retail manager I can't help but wonder if this is good press or bad for the store.

she never played the race card first of all. everyone is assuming that. it was carefully worded by her so everyone knows shes not playing the race card.they claimed not to know who she was. well that was yesterday i read todays story and apparently she is gonna play this card. either way the store is closed id snub her too when the stores closed.

I don't much like Oprah, partially because my wife watches it sometimes when I'm around.

Money and wealth changes people,,, although the store, if they wanted money, should've opened it for her, and sell her all she wanted to buy.

What bothers me most about Oprah, is that rose up from poverty to where she is know, but she seems to forget that. It just seems all the people in her audience, and people she helps with their 'problems', are the upper-class suburbanites, with their suburbanite problems (problems that pale in comparison to the 'real' problems the poor have).

She seems like a cult leader,,,

From what I've read, the quote about "having a problem with North Africans" was completely fabricated. The store video of Oprah being handed a business card and told to come in tomorrow also seems to refute that stupid claim - why would they give her a card if they didn't want her business?

Celebrities get away with murder. If the store is closed, don't think they are obligated to open up just for you. I'm sure the store employees have lives outside of work. I certainly wouldn't open my doors for Oprah if she came in 15 after closing, I would be cleaning up and getting ready to go home.

Yeah, this whole thing stinks. That's what I heard at first and then in subsequent stories it wasn't mentioned at all. I think someone was trying to play the race card but it's unclear that it was Oprah. That said, next time she should get her ass to the store before it closes or have one of her myriad of assitants go if she's too busy.

Why am I reminded of the Kevin Smith Prince Monologue:

("it's 3 AM and Prince wants a camel, it's hard to explain that you can't get a camel in Minnesota at 3AM")
