Trump's Twin Towers

After last week's announcement by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation to rework the original Daniel Libeskind design of the 1776 foot "Freedom Tower" due to NYPD concerns that it was to close to West Street and deemed unsafe from future terror attacks, another bolder plan has been introduced.—by none other than the one and only Donald Trump.

Trump, along with architects Kenneth Gardner and Herbert Belton's plan is essentially to rebuild the twin towers as they stood, with one small change. The new towers would be 111 floors, one floor taller that the original World Trade Center. Trump also claims that the newly rebuilt towers would be much stronger than the previous ones and would be able to withstand a similar attack to the one that occurred on September 11th.

While the overall design is shorter than the plan proposed by Mr. Libeskind it provides more usable office space.

Though it would be taller than the twin towers, the Freedom Tower would have much of its top one-third given over to airy latticework and a spire emitting light into the night. Only around 70 floors would be usable office space.

Trump described the existing design as "essentially a skeleton" at the top. "If we rebuild the World Trade Center in the form of a skeleton, the terrorists win."

However, Trump said he was leaving it up to developer Larry Silverstein, who owns the lease on the World Trade Center site, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the land, to execute the design first introduced last year by engineer Ken Gardner.

"I only have the power of persuasion," Trump said. "It's a very simple power, but sometimes it can be very strong."

Let's hope the LMDC doesn't tell the Donald, "You're fired."

Yes. Take for instance those new mattresses where in the commercials they put a glass of wine on one side and jump up and down on the other. Make a tower out of those glasses on one side, they'll stay standing after the jumping. The base absorbs most of the shock and the rest is distributed through the structure. Now, take a baseball bat and it that same tower of glasses. It's going to shatter and fall. They're two entirely different types of "attack" but one is just a bit easier to prevent any major damage from. It should be noted that I'm neither a seismologist nor an architect, so I could be completely wrong.

My vote has been for ever since I heard of it:Gaudi's design

'Gaudi's 95-year-old plans, which were originally designs for a futuristic hotel about the same size as the Empire State building, will be entered into the competition this spring by a group of art historians, architects and enthusiasts of his work.

It has been said that the plans may well have been intended for the original site of the World Trade Center, although this cannot be verified.'

I know this idea has been scratched, but I'd love to see the NYC skyline with a little Spanish flair.

Personally... I think the idea is bad. It's just not enough. 1 Floor? They should make it 1776 feet still if they're going to rebuild them... or make them double in size. It needs to be a memorial and a kick in the face to terrorists.

if they're going to make the towers as they were..it'd probably be a good idea to add in bridge walk ways every so many floors that go from tower to tower.

Fuck Trump. His "riches to riches" story is so lame, just like his buildings.

He holds a huge press conference to pontificate on a piece of land he has no interest in? When, at the same time, he is intensely secretive for plans on his own property in the area?

Yes, by all means, lets rebuild the two ugly towers exactly the same. That'll show those terrorists!!

I mean, what is more distasteful: the design for the Freedom Tower, or Trump exploiting tragedy to get some publicity for his tanking TV show?

Well I wasnt stating total structure damage elimination like maybe the windows would be broken and the surface would be trashed
but they woudlnt collapse and the well... I think you might see what I mean.
(also as a bonus oh wait new york doesnt really ahve any natural disasters....
wow thank you radical militant nutcases mad -- anywho)
and ive seen those bed commercials..... they freak me.
Of course I was thinking of a base that would be located underground too..... hence distributing the shock through -all- the ground.... and the ground is a pretty big thing....
but hey I am no architect eithter and probably have bollocks of an idea what I am thinking about. But. It would be a rather cool idea.

Well, I think the idea is not to make the buildings completely impervious to a 9/11-type plane crash, but to design them so they will remain standing even if a few floors are fucked up. I'm not an engineer or anything, so take this all with a grain of salt, but I remember reading/hearing something to the effect that the original towers were believed to be designed so that they could withstand the force of a plane crash, but that noone anticipated that a plane full of fuel hitting the building would cause an explosion/fire so intense that it would essentially melt the structure holding the building up, which as I understand it is what happened to both buildings. So what Trump is talking about, I assume, is to design the new buildings somehow so that this doesn't happen if they are subjected to a similar attack. I just don't see how this is possible. Then again, as stated before, I'm not an engineer.

Yeah, I'm kinda sentimental. I want the towers back. I don't care who has them built. And I want to go right up to the top and look down at everything, like I did when I was a wee lass.

Having the towers back would be like your Mom dying only to be brought back as a zombie. Sure it'd be great to have her back, but it would probably just be too weird.
