Day Set Aside to Celebrate How Great It Is To Be Not Gay

The University of Texas at Arlington, where every day is Straight Pride Day, hosted its first Heterosexual Kissing Contest. Sponsored by the campus’ College Republicans, the contest gave prizes to those boy-girl couples that displayed the funniest kiss, the “best kiss,” and the most romantic kiss. A bevy of other groups, such as the campus’ University Democrats, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and the Gay, Lesbian and Everybody Else Organization” countered the contest by holding their own “Celebration of Human Pride Day.”

The opposing groups offered cupcakes decorated with peace signs and rainbows; pamphlets detailing the evils of racism, sexism and homophobia; and homoerotic literature.

The group promoted the idea of equal rights and ending discrimination. Members had a petition to achieve true marriage equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans.

“We are not separating or discriminating,” said Candice Berkebile, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance president. “When we say equal, we mean equal, not just rights for our group but rights for everybody.”

Romack received the best kiss award for engaging in an interracial and interpolitical party kiss with English junior Chuck Lathan, and she received the funniest kiss award for participating in a three-way, all-girl kiss.

And really, it’s all about everybody winning awards for kissing people at random. It’s also nice to see conservatives tapping into the “free love” aesthetic.

I still fail to grasp what is so threatening about homosexuality to some people. And they did it to "promote heterosexuality?" Are we really in danger of losing it? Has it become endangered and nobody told me? I wonder if I could get governmental protection for being an endangered heterosexual? But wait, if it was a "heterosexual" kissing contest, how come an award went to three girls kissing? I'm flummoxed by this. Anyway, it just seems like it was done to mock gay pride, like someone in the article said.

I think being straight is pretty awesome... but I think being a homo is just as awesome.

Being bi sucks, though. Seriously. I mean, whyever would a girl want to get it on with two guys who are willing to suck each others' dicks?

what is so wrong w/a kissing contest only between men and women? let's not be so sensative. sometimes you can discriminate and not be as aweful a human being as you may like to think (or as dumb a one).

maybe there should only be suicide human beings. my human everything group is upset.

hahaha...that just sounded funny

but yea - being gay is no less awesome than being straight. either way you're turned on/in love with someone that means something to you, who cares if they are the same sex or not. i don't support either one more than the other...

altho i do wish i had gay/bi friends so i could randomly make out with them in situations that would freak out homophobics...but most of my friends are just as closed-minded frown

Its like having a rally to promote being caucasian. What's the point when you are in the majority. All you are really demonstrating is that you are afraid of losing control.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I think that holding straight pride event s is every bit as offensive and sinister as holding white pride rallies/parades/etc.

The message I see people sending is not "we are great" it is "we are greater than the alternative."

edit: plus what was said just above.

NOthing. Guys and girls kissing? Just fine. But these guys are doing it to mock gay pride days where gay folks kiss in public in a show of unity and support . Heterosexuals (that's you and me) aren't really in danger of getting our asses kicked for macking with a lady in public.

good point (as was the other response to my post), i thought of that too., although the reason for the guy/girl only contest was only speculated on and you never got the reaction of people hosting the guy/girl only contest to the other contest (maybe they didn't care). to me the article sounded like a bunch of dumbasses squabbling w/a bunch of other dumbasses. it's a kissing contest for christ's sake, what a medium to get your agenda through.
