Diving Into the Shallow End of the Gene Pool

If you're ever inclined to marry your first cousin, there is an organization to help you out.

C.U.D.D.L.E. International, founded in 2002, is a privately funded organization dedicated to dispelling social prejudices and discriminating laws based on common myths about cousin marriages.

Goals

  • To continue extensive research on the issue of consanguinity
  • To produce educational materials for all walks of life
  • To bring about legislative reform in areas which do not currently allow cousin marriage
  • To provide a support network free from harassment
  • To provide referrals to legal and medical professionals
  • To provide scholarships to cousin-couples and their children


I don't know what's worse—their take on the Biblical perspective on "cousin-lovin" or the creepy sameness of the photos on the front page.

Wow. Just... wow.

While I find the idea of inbreedind disturbing, it does make for amusing photo opportunities. Like the picture of the cousin-couple at the gates of Graceland in that site's photo slideshow. And the photo of the guy with the balding mullet. Priceless.

From one of my journal entries:

Fun fact: Over the past 64 generations (since Roman times), the number of people whose genetic couplings were required to bring about the birth of you is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000. This number, though thousands of times bigger than the number of people who have ever lived, is accurate. How? incest, of course. Seriously, albeit possibly on a more removed level (ie: distant cousins, etc.) If you're dating someone from the same country and race, it is very likely that you two are related on some level.

I'm not saying you should seek out relatives for mating purposes, but chances are you're already double dipping in the gene pool.

A couple of cousins in my family tree got it on, and lived together until they died.
No kids, thank god.

Seems like such a low number, but I guess it's not if a generation is about 22 years. Seems like I should have had many, many more generations of grandfolks stretching back to Rome...

i think the point they're missing is that while two first cousins having children is low risk, if that trend keeps up for a generation or two (or more), the risk gets worse.

whatever makes people happy, but still, yuck.
