Texas Cheerleaders Too Sexy For Their Skirts

Al Edwards, a Democrat from Houston, has criticized the dirty dancing routines of his home state's cheerleaders. He is apparently so offended by "spirit fingers" and jaunty little skirts that he has proposed banning moves from routines that could be considered "sexually explicit."

Mr Edwards says the sexually suggestive routines send the wrong message to teenagers.

Cheerleading apparently runs deep in the heart of Texas, a fact that does not bode well for his proposal.

"If you're in Texas you start when you come out of the womb," Rhonda Roberts, marketing and promotions director for the United Spirit Association which offers summer training camps and competitions, said.

Ms Roberts says that while explicit and inappropriate moves have now become common in cheerleading routines, they are frowned upon by judges at competitions.

She welcomes the move by Mr Edwards, though she thinks the ban will be hard to enforce.

"Anything that promotes family-oriented behaviour is a good thing," she said.

"I think the parents will probably appreciate it."


Edwards proposes to make school funding contingent on a routine clean-up.

Under Edwards' bill, if a school district knowingly permits such a performance, funds from the state would be reduced in an amount to be determined by the education commissioner.

Edwards said he filed the bill as a result of several instances of seeing such ribald performances in his district.

I don't think I ever saw a cheerleader performance when I was in highschool... Or afterward for that matter... way to much time spent behind the equiptment shed getting drunk on wild turkey and trying to convince a friend of mine that "this won't count as losing it, I Promise."

I say let the girls cheer with poles, pasties and an ATM somewhere close...

spirit fingers-- when a cheerleader holds up her hands and waves her fingers back and forth in a vaguely threatening manner. i swear to christ, it's a real phenomenon.

It's a sport based around gymnastically-inclined high-schoolers wearing short skirts. That's like trying to clean up football's violent tendencies.

That said, I fucking love cheerleaders.
