NHL Cancel Remainder of 2004-05 Season

The NHL announced Wednesday that the remainder of the 2004-05 hockey season has been canceled. On Tuesday, the NHL proposed a salary cap of $42.5 million per team; the players offered $49 million.

A lockout over a salary cap shut down the game before it ever got a chance to start in October. Now the NHL, already low on the popularity scale in the United States, becomes the first major pro sports league in North America to lose an entire season to a labor dispute.

"As I stand before you today, it is my sad duty to announce ... it no longer is practical to conduct even an abbreviated season," commissioner Gary Bettman said. "Accordingly, I have no choice but to announce the formal cancellation of play for 2004-05."

Now the question is whether or not hockey be back for the 2005-06 season?

UPDATE: THE NHL IS BACK IN TALKS!!!

who gives a shit???...sports mean nothing to me other than encouraging idiots to get drunk and yell about crap...go to the library and read a book...enrich your life and spend your time focusing on something real...sports is a diversion from doing anything that is meaningful in this life...go look at naked girls at least ....

You know not all sports fans are drunken assholes right? I'm pretty bright, I read, I go to school, I watch hockey. It's a source of entertainment. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Leave me to watch my sports and fuck off. smile

Fuck you greedy players. Fuck you greedy owners. Fuck you all. They're paying you unholy amounts to PLAY FUCKING HOCKEY FOR CHRIST SAKE! Suck it the fuck up.

No hockey season this year was depressing. On the up side, I think it may have prolonged the life of my liver.

New rule, if you live somewhere where you can't make real ice, you don't get a hockey team!

So what do yout ell to the Tampa Bay franchise? They just won the Stanley Cup.

they managed to win the stanley cup and they STILL lost money.

it's wrong for you all to blame the players though. it's the union you should be blaming. they players aren't involved in the negotiating. i'm sure most of them would have taken the last offer or even some before that. but even if it was "the players" they deserve tons of money. they work a hell of a lot harder than a-rod does.

i really expected more "sports are just stupid!" replies though.

man, i'm so bummed about this. the only sporting event i look forward to every year is the kings on FSW. this year has made me feel incomplete. at least i got to put my hands on the cup before it was too late.

ColdJoy, i hear ya, when i blame the players, its more of blaming their side of the argument, which is expressed through their PA representation. The union rep though, is nothing mroe then the voice of the players, if they voiced an overwhelming desire to take a hardcap and play, the union would have to.

This was an excellent idea, because the strike worked so well for baseball.

Sorry man, but I just can't agree with this. They're playing a game that they enjoy and making shitloads of money. I would much rather see a brain surgeon or a teacher make more money before some sports figure.

The real question is, why does a player need to ask for more money?! I mean really, most of these people make more per season (remember: not even a full year) than most of us will ever see and they have the gall to ask for more? Fuck the NHL and anyone who supports it. It's a waste of money especially when Junior leagues like the AHL and amateur hockey is more fun to watch anyways.

Damn it! The Wings were going to win this season too...

And Louys, not to defend the violence, but Moore was asking for the initial punch. Bertuzzi isn't a goon, he doesn't play like that. But that season in particular the Aves were agitators. And when you push and push like that someone is going to smack you down. Look what they did to Steve Yzerman just the week before.

I have watched the Bertuzzi footage over and over, and I honestly believe that Bertuzzi got a lucky sucker punch in that KO'd Moore, Bertuzzi had ahold of his jersey and when Moore went down his weight pulled Bertuzzi down too, and the force of Todd's weight is what broke his neck, not the punch.

The media said over and over that Bertuzzi maliciously drove Moore's face into the ice, but watch the footage, Todd looks surprised to be falling over.

Sorry for the off topic side track...

He got lucky he's not in prison. He hit a man who was turned away, he fell on him and then he tried to hit him again when his face was on the ice and missed.. Then an Av who came to Steve's defense fell on top of it all, I think that was Skrastins.

This is off topic but that's a major reason reason hockey isn't as popular with the fans. The rest of that game in particular was like watching gladiator night or something, there were a lot of fights and neither one of those teams has a lot of goons. The owners aren't responsible enough to not spend money they don't have, then they let their multi-million dollar players fight on the ice on a regular basis and rsk serious inury. Players get injured a lot in actual play, it's just foolish to risk it in fights, especially if you're paying somebody $10m a year.

I had season tickets to the Avs last year, first time ever, and the last time. On the smaller games that aren't on TV where it's a blowout. They will just let fights happen. It's an accepted part of the game. So what do you think happens the next time Bertuzzi plays Colorado if the NHL ever plays again? Peter Worrell is going to make Bertuzzi face him and fight and Bertuzzi will get beat up, probably 2 or 3 times in that game. everybody knows this and expects this and that's messed up.

It's a great game but the fighting represents everything that is wrong with the world of sport and caters to a fan demographic that is too small to sustain the NHL.

If you don't know what you're talking about, you shouldn't try to sound like you do.

The players are NOT asking for more money. The owners, in fact, are asking for a cut in salary. Would you be happy if your union came to you and said "we made an agreement with management. You're now getting 24% less money" ?

The owners dug this hole because THEY were greedy. Instead of critically looking at expanding the league(Dallas? Carolinas? Tampa?), they chose to put the money they made from new franchises above the game. They killed it, and they expect the players to suffer for their mistakes.
