Accused Teen Blames Murder on Antidepressant

Shy, decent boys don't normally kill their grandparents with a pump-action shotgun. But according to a South Carolina defense team, a shy, decent boy under the influence of Zoloft might fly into a murderous rage. If that is indeed true, then that boy must not be held responsible for his actions.

So claims Andy Vickery, defense attorney for 15-year-old Chris Pittman, the "shy, decent boy" in question. Pittman, at the age of 12, was charged with two counts of homicide after shooting his grandparents and setting their house on fire.

“This is a case about one drug that has taken three lives. When you hear the case, you will have the power and opportunity to give one back,” he said. “A shy, decent boy was acting under the influence of a mind-altering drug.” [Vickery says.]

Prosecutors contend Pittman shot his grandparents because they disciplined him for fighting on a school bus.

“This is not a case about Zoloft. This is not a case about Pfizer,” prosecutor Barney Giese told the jury in opening statements. “This is a case about Chris Pittman.”

Pittman, who had threatened suicide, was put on Zoloft three weeks before the slayings, and his dose was doubled just two days earlier.

Recently, antidepressants such as Paxil and Zoloft have come under fire from the Food and Drug Administration. These drugs are said to be linked to an increase in suicidal behavior in children and adolescents. They are now required to carry "black box warnings" on their labels to warn parents of these risks.

Pfizer [the maker of Zoloft] has vigorously fought cases claiming antidepressants cause violent or suicidal behavior.

Pittman could be sentenced to 30 years to life in prison if convicted.

What the fuck is with a 15 year old being charged as an adult for what he did when he was 12.

This case reminded me of the Victor Brancaccio case. Brancaccio, brain damaged and retarded, was on Zoloft when he killed an elderly Florida woman. You'd think he would have been aquitted on the grounds of insanity or involuntary intoxication (I think in Florida involuntary intoxication is considered insanity). You'd think, but he was, nonetheless, convicted. Vickery, by all appearances, is a basically normal kid. What chance do you think he has?

The drug insert warns against the potential side-effects of agression and delusions. I wish the authorities would bring these pill-pushing doctors up on charges.

I was always too happy to even think about killing my grandparents. Hell, I couldn't do anything but laugh when I was taking zoloft.

Umm yeah, okay, blame the drug he was put on to prevent suicide for his homidal rage. Good call.

I was on Zoloft from 16-18, and all it did was make me apathetic and bored.

I long for the simple days when they blamed all teenage murders on Marilyn Manson.

Kind of ironic considering Zoloft keeps Mike Tyson from "killing y'all," as he's even said.

I support the defense in this case 100%. This has become an all too common occurance of kids killing their parents or friends or schoolmates for absolutely no reason while being on an antidepressant like Prozac, Zoloft, etc. The reason these kids are acting like this is because SSRI's (as they're refered to) trigger the fight or flight hormone which can lead to outburst of mania or suicide. In every case of random school shootings or psycho murdering spree, the killer was usually always placed on psychiatric drugs to, ironically enough, control their manic behavior. These drugs also dull out any sense of right and wrong, so the person committing these acts usually doesn't know what he or she are doing is wrong. This is just my experience from the psychopharmaceutical world. Anybody else have any thoughts?

Tell me about it. These drug companies have us all believing that everything is a medical condition that can be treated with one or more of their drugs.

Can't get an erection? You must be because have you erectile dysfunction. It can't be that the old lady just doesn't do it for you anymore. Take Viagra.

Feel sad. You must have depression. It can't be that your life sucks.
Take Prozac.

Feel anxious?. You must be suffering from an anxiety disorder.
It can't be that anxiety is a natural response to modern life.
Take Paxil.

I swear, the people who run these drug companies won't be happy till we're all walking around like zombies--zombies with perpetual boners!

If you've ever known anyoone with major depressive disorder, you'd know that it has really very little to do with how much her life sucks, and much more to do with a chemical imbalance. It's not easy to understand clinical depression (or really any psychological disorders) until you have either been through them or been close to someone while he was doing so.

One of my closest friends is schizoaffective (concurrent with other disorders), and if she doesn't take a certain drug she hallucinates. She hears voices that are not there. Last time she went off her pills, convinced by a boyfriend that they make her dull and boring and that psychology is bullshit, it almost ended her life.

I don't like that people have to use pills to regulate their moods, but the simple fact is that doing so keeps some people alive long enough to receive behavioral and psychological treatment.

i think what he's saying is that not everyone who feels sad has depression and needs pills. Some people feel crappy because their life IS crappy.
