Stripping as career goal

A guest speaker at a Palo Alto, CA middle school recently told eighth grade students that they could earn more than $250,000 a year as strippers.

"It's sick, but it's true," Fried, president of Foster City's Precision Selling, a management consulting firm, told The Associated Press. "The truth of the matter is you can earn a tremendous amount of money as an exotic dancer, if that's your desire."

The school has asked Fried to give his 55-minute presentation, "The Secret of a Happy Life," for the past three years.

A tip sheet he distributes to students includes a list of 140 potential careers and areas of interest they can consider pursuing. Along with professions as accounting and nursing, the list offers such nontraditional suggestions as exotic dancing, stripping and acting as a spiritual medium.

He went on to say:

"For every two inches up there, you should get another $50,000 on your salary," student Jason Garcia, 14, said.

Damn, did my guidance counselor screw upÂ…

When I was in 6th grade as a class activity they passed out the classifies job section and we had to pick a job and write down what you need to learn to perform that job.

I got the letter "E" and picked the job "Exotic Dancer". Needless to say I got detention that day.

dude, I am a stripper, and would never encourage an eith grader to do it. In fact, I wouldn't even tell them I was one. I would lie and say I was a cocktail waitress. I hope he is sued. If I was a parent I'd be pissed. mad

Being naked for money doesn't require a lack of self-respect -- ask around here on SG. smile

He wasn't encouraging them. It seems more like he was making a point. That you shouldn't base your career goals on money, but on what you want to do with your life.

"Fried's presentation "helped me realize that my career choice should not be influenced by money," one student wrote in a thank-you letter. "It should be influenced by what we like and are good at." "
Not to mention that the speaker said, "It's sick, but it's true,"

The speaker was a complete jackass and the content was inappropriate.

That being said, I don't see a cause of action here. There could be a lawsuit I suppose, maybe for intentional infliction of emotional distress, but it would go away pretty quickly.

working the sex industry and selling your body as a fantasy should have never even been on the list in thefirst place. call me conservative if you want but that's my opinion. eighth graders are not mentally or emotionally mature enough to consider the pros and cons of dancing. for fuck's sake, they still laugh at farts in the middle of class.....

It's easier to make money if you are willing to do anything to get it, don'tcha think?

Also, it's kind of lame to say someone's opinion is wrong, full stop, no explanation. Not a very persuasive argument...
