Winning The Lottery Sucks

In the latest calamity that has befallen Jack Whittaker since he won a $314.9 million Powerball jackpot on Christmas Day of 2002, his granddaughter, Brandi Bragg, was found dead near her boyfriend's home. Despite the fact that the body was wrapped in plastic, there are no signs of violence, and police have not yet ruled the case a homicide.

Bragg's body was found Monday behind a junked van several hundred feet from the home of Steve Crosier, whose son Brandon was Bragg's boyfriend, said Trooper S.E. Wolfe.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Bragg may have died in the Crosiers' house and her body was later moved.

Wolfe said Monday's discovery was based on interviews with Brandon Crosier and others. "We are focused on him but I wouldn't call him a suspect yet," he said.

Steve Crosier, in a brief conversation with reporters outside his house, said: "All I know is she OD'd and Brandon freaked out."

Since he won the lottery, Whittaker has been arrested several times for DUI; he has been ordered into rehab after his second DUI conviction of the year. He has been sued twice for assaulting women at a racetrack, and has suffered multiple break-ins of his home, car, and business, including one robbery of his car outside a titty-bar that took almost $600,000 in cash from his car. Additionally, a friend of his granddaughter was found dead at his house in September.

I'd say that this is proof of how money doesn't solve your problems (or, to use P. Diddy's immortal phrase, "The more money we come across, the more problems we see"), but I feel fairly confident saying that I'd probably have done a better job with the money than he has. I certainly wouldn't leave a half-mill in my car parked outside a tit bar.

If you don't know how to live, a few hundred million dollars isn't going to change that.

this headline should probably read:

"being a scumbag sucks."

"I certainly wouldn't leave a half-mill in my car parked outside a tit bar."

which begs the question, how much did he take IN to the titty-bar?!!!

I wonder if the guy who stole the money from his car used his windfall to totally turn his life around...

If he's still going to titty bars after winning a fortune, the man obviously has no imagination. He could be firing at palm trees with a rocket launcher, for crying out loud.

why do you have to be stupid to play the lottery? becuz you throw a ton of money away for the chance to win a lot. how many people actually win a lot? not many...and it's probably someone stupider than you.
you may think i don't know what im talking about but being cashier i know the stupid people that come in every day and play 53 dollars worth of lottery.
yes i know your life sux and you want to win to make it better...but as this story shows...it just ain't gonna fucking happen.

ps. don't get mad at me if you play the lottery and i just called you stupid. i also just called my father and grandfather and boss stupid. biggrin

If you save $53 dollars a day for 365 days, you'd have almost $20,000. Two years of that kind of savings and you could pay your rent just with the interest.

Keith - not exactly -

Interest rates are about 0.75% on a savings account, and up to about 3% for a long term CD. If you have about $300,000 in the bank, the interest at .75% works out to about 200 bucks/month before taxes. At 3% it goes to about 800/mo before taxes.

If you can get a 7 percent return on your money, then you're talking 1800/month before taxes and you're doing OK.

The interest on $40K isn't going to cover your rent though...
