Makers of "Matrix" and "Terminator" sued for copyright infringment, and lost!

It seems the Wachowski bros couldnt come up for the crap storyline of matrix by themselves!

"Monday, October 4th 2004 ended a six-year dispute involving Sophia Stewart, the Wachowski Brothers, Joel Silver and Warner Brothers. Stewart's allegations, involving copyright infringement and racketeering, were received and acknowledged by the Central District of California, Judge Margaret Morrow residing.

Stewart, a New Yorker who has resided in Salt Lake City for the past five years, will recover damages from the films, The Matrix I, II and III, as well as The Terminator and its sequels. She will soon receive one of the biggest payoffs in the history of Hollywood, as the gross receipts of both films and their sequels total over 2.5 billion dollars.

Stewart filed her case in 1999, after viewing the Matrix, which she felt had been based on her manuscript, "The Third Eye," copyrighted in 1981. In the mid-eighties Stewart had submitted her manuscript to an ad placed by the Wachowski Brothers, requesting new sci-fi works.

According to court documentation, an FBI investigation discovered that more than thirty minutes had been edited from the original film, in attempt to avoid penalties for copyright infringement. The investigation also stated that "credible witnesses employed at Warner Brothers came forward, claiming that the executives and lawyers had full knowledge that the work in question did not belong to the Wachowski Brothers." These witnesses claimed to have seen Stewart's original work and that it had been "often used during preparation of the motion pictures."
The defendants tried, on several occasions, to have Stewart's case dismissed, without success."

Wow. Can't believe so many people hate the Matrix sequels. Its one of the best trilogies of our time. Even better than the LOTR trilogy.

1. The 4th of October is my birthday.

2. Serves anyone right for having Keanu Reeves the star of any film, let alone two franchise sequels to one. Who paid to see this shit anyway?

3. That writer girl deserves more than her due in cash; she deserves "created by" credits on any of the shitty re-packing deals that come out for the films every dumb Christmas. And seriously, who the fuck made Keanu Reeves films profitable anyway? She deserves a percentage of the yearly net of anyone who went to see this shit in the theater.

4. ...so what if I'd pay money to see a re-release of Point Break in theaters, I'm still not responsible for this.

Yeah the first one was great. The second was so-so, it had good and a lot of bad points. Then my intuition kicked in at the end of the second one, and I realized it would not be in my best interest to watch the third.

Does this mean that William Gibson and the estate of Philip K. Dick will now be able to sue and win the other half of the Wachowskis' money? 'Cause they sure deserve to.

C'mon fanboys, grow up. Read some decent science fiction, or some decent philosophy, or even some decent comic books, for God's sake. The Matrix movies---yes, all three of them---are shameless, stupid, derivative crap. They aren't even good shameless, stupid, derivative crap, like Star Wars is. They're just plain crap.

erm, someone already sued james cameron over the terminator movies, for plagiarism, and won. and the script in question was written before this 'third eye' business.

so does that mean that this story is a load of crap, or that this woman is herself a plagiarist?

also, the termiinator came out in 84 didn't it, why did she not sue then?

i can't find a single news agency reporting this at the moment, and that warner owns the media story doesn't fly, you don't think fox would like to laugh at them?

i'd laugh my arse off if it's true, but at the moment it smells rather like bullshit...

Eh, I think everyone's just okay with starting in the real world, but a strong anti-sci-fi bias makes people suddenly find ridiculous the sequels that start outside of it. I love how everyone rags on the Matrix sequels and no one talks about how Peter Jackson, starting with the 2nd LotR and then bigtime in the 3rd, made all these stupid changes (he removed my favorite part of the series: when Sam puts on the ring!) The only problem with 3rd Matrix was no tension in the fight scene at the end. Meanwhile, 3rd LotR has great fight scenes, so no one minds that the books have been bastardized.

My 17 centsworth.

I heard about the whole "Third Eye" thing....

Shity title.

2.5 Bil?

Bitch better keep her mouth shut and be happy.

Anyway. Good for her.

Although The Matrix was a fantastic movie... i agree that 2 and 3 were just a meens to show "what happened"

I meen... fuck... you couldnt follow a movie like The Matrix

Only once in a while does a film come along that changes the film industry and has that kind of effect.
(ie: Starwars, The Matrix, LOTR) you get where im going.

ciao

I don't see so much uh, Dick in the Matrix, but Gibson, holy crap. I just read Neuromancer for the first time a few weeks ago and it was unbelievable how much stuff was lifted. He even used the term "the matrix."

Send that man a check! He's poor!
