The Govn't Poisoned My Baby And All I Got Is This Lousy T-shirt

The Enviromental Protection Agency plans on launching a study that will examine the effects of chemicals and pesticides on young children, to be tested on the offspring in low income families.

In exchange for participating in this study, the families will receive $970, a t-shirt, a video camera and a framed certificate of "appreciation".

The study is intended to find out how young children's bodies are affected by absorbing such toxic chemicals such as pesticides.

Critics predict that the study will favor the chemical industry, as the research is partially funded by the American Chemistry Council-- whose members includes the likes of Exxon and DOW.

The EPA is not intending for people to purposefully expose their kids to chemicals, however to qualify for the study, families are required to provide proof that they do use toxic chemicals in and around their house on a regular basis. Critics express their concerns that many families will begin using chemicals just so they can qualify for the study and receive the money.

The study entitled CHEERS (Children’s Environmental Exposure Research Study) will look at how chemicals can be ingested, inhaled or absorbed by children ranging from babies to 3 years old.

This just sounds so wrong, instead of researching these families they should tell them to stop exposing their kids to poison. "CHEERS", here's a t-shirt and now let us look at how toxic your children have become.

Editor's note: As of November 11, this study has been postponed for a "final review" before parents are allowed to release highly poisonous chemicals onto their unsuspecting children.

I thought I had more to say, but... this is just wrong. How can someone accept a title at the EPA and work against the agency's supposed mission statement?

Argh.

*edited to wonder*
How long does the study last? Why don't they at least include free health coverage during the length of the study?

The actual study.

Oh my gawd they want to poison the children!!!

Or maybe you should look at the study. The only link you put up was second hand from organic consumers. Way to use loaded language and leave out half of the relevant information to make this study sound like a terrible thing.

Thanks to ThePirate for the link...

It looks like they're trying to correlate the effects of already-present chemicals with the impact on the children. They need to gather data on what chemicals are present, but they don't introduce anything new except for equipment to gather data.

It's doubtful the EPA could prevent parents from using these chemicals... so what's wrong with gathering data so they might actually be able to prevent their use in the future?

People use horrific chemicals around the house. most people have no idea what's really in those bottles, or how to properly use them, or how much to use, or what to wear when using them, or what not to mix them with.

In the workplace there are COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) and H&S laws. There's none of that in the home.

And that's just the stuff people buy to clean and scent their homes, it doesn't include cosmetics, flea treatments for pets, glues in furniture, anti-flammable coatings, chemicals used to make carpets or paint or treat for bug infestations.

It'd be scary to see what children have in theri bodies.

the whole thing just sounds weird, calling a poison research project CHEERS and giving people Tshirts for participating just sounds surreal and kinda morbid to me.

There was a time when this would have been the plot of a Science fiction book. Where have those days gone?

Do they really think offering a thousand bucks and a camera to low-income families won't give someone incentive to abuse this study?

How would someone abuse this study? It's not like they get paid more or less depending on their level of pesticide use.

People who use chemicals around their young children should be offered education regarding the harmful effects of the products rather than giving these families money to research their suffering children...how awful puke
