"Lost In Translation" racist?

Joi is talking about a campaign asking movie industry people to vote against "Lost In Translation" due to it's negative depiction of Japanese people. Have you seen it? What do you think?

Having been to Japan, I would say the movie is accurate.

I do this (ie. quote the Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek) in most communities that I belong to:

"Another thing that bothers me about this multiculturalism is when people ask me: 'How can you be sure that you are not a racist?' My answer is that there is only one way. If I can exchange insults, brutal jokes, dirty jokes, with a member of a different race and we both know it's not meant in a racist way. If, on the other hand, we play this politically correct game - 'Oh, I respect you, how interesting your customs are' - this is inverted racism, and it is disgusting."

i didn't love the movie as much as some people seem to but the most prominent reaction i had was wanting to visit tokyo as soon as possible. if it was racist, i guess it was lost on me. i can't remember an especially sympathetic character in the entire movie, asian or white, save for a couple of clubgoers.

Haven't heard a peep from the Japanese saying anything of the sort. I figure if the group affected could care less, then the person complaining is just whining for attention. As it usually goes.

Kinda like that parody some of you may remember about the Lord of the Rings being racist; a few reporters actually read that article and started editorializing along the same lines, never realizing their inspiration was nothing more than a joke.

I thought that Japan was more of a symbol than an actual place in that movie, so I didn't interpret the depiction as racist.

People are WAAAAAAAY too quick to jump on the "racist" bandwagon. The movie was partially about being out of your culture and it portrayed that fine. If that comes across as racist to people I guess those people must understand every aspect of every culture and they have never felt that alienation that comes from encountering a culture different from your own. That, to me, is ridiculous posturing, nobody could possibly be completely knowledgable about and comfortable with every culture. This P.C. bullshit is way out of hand.

well I don't think they took an effort to portray the Japanese in a negative way; perhaps capitalism though...

No.

No.

No.

No.

No.

No.

And while I'm at it:

"...quite frankly we've reached a point in history where "racist" has replaced "cannibalistic mass murderer" as the worst thing you can possibly be."

What a bunch of McCarthy witch hunting paranoid schitzos.
