Pencil, Paper Responsible for Child Exploitation

Listen up all you pirates; you're going down. Senator Hatch is at it again. Our nation's crusader for intellectual property rights strikes another ill-considered blow for The Man.

From Ars Technica:

The latest legislative gem from Hatch is the Induce Act to be introduced next week. Induce allegedly stands for "Inducement Devolves into Unlawful Child Exploitation Act," and it furthers Hatch's exploitation of children-centered concerns in his quest to appease deep-pocketed entertainment companies. In short, the act seeks to hold liable anything and everything that could be used to infringe copyrights. Burn the VCR, burn the photocopiers, folks. For the children, of course.

To make matters worse, the language of the act is amazingly hostile. Prohibiting counsel is a gross abuse of one's legal rights, but as the bill reads, if a lawyer even consults you in your concerns over copyright infringement, that lawyer could be infringing as well.

Yee hah! That's it! Keep 'em ignorant, then sue their pants off! That's the spirit of America, Yes, sirree!

Since the Induce Act hasn't been officially presented yet, it's not mentioned on Hatch's own website. Perhaps it's not too late to embarrass the old boy into rewriting the bill into something sensible, or better yet, dropping it entirely. You've got one week to make a stink about this, troopers.

Whenever a politician starts talking about "the children", keep one eye on your wallet and the other on your liberty.

Dude, you could've done a much better job of explaining what we should be making a stink about. i seriously doubt they are writing a bill that reads "Burn the VCR, burn the photocopiers, etc."

And what the hell does it have to do with exploited children?

I have a hard time seeing how stories based on editorial pieces by college student Ken "Caeser" Fisher are considered noteworthy on a newswire.

Ken's been editing Ars Technica for some years now. Dismissing him as being nothing more than a college student would be a mistake. My personal experience with the site shows the information there to be frequently valuable, and I've seen tech stories break there before anywhere else on numerous occassions.

But if you don't like the Ars Technica version, perhaps you'd prefer ZDNet's take on things?

ZD coperation is a shit pile. I am not going to waste time on that now though.

This has nothing to do with children, what is, is a way to go after people hosting file sharing projects. The idea is, if a reasonabl person can deduce that your system is in place to allow people to infringe on copy righted stuff your going down. It is also badly worded and could be twisted into a whole lotta shit.

Technically, I suppose we could go after universites for give the dorms internet access eh?

it has nothing to do with exploited children. that is just in the act's name so that people who don't know anything about this will think it's a good thing.

You know, on the other hand this is a perfectly legitimate excuse to take up the life of a dashing highwayman, smuggling VCRs into the ports and holding up DVD shipments. think of the danger, the excitement, the velvet and the spiffy hats!
