World Naked Bike Ride Day (aka "Critical Ass")

Seattle, Olympia, and Bellingham are among 22 cities that will celebrate World Naked Bike Ride Day to promote the end of U.S. oil dependence. Seattle police will allow the ride to occur as, "from a legal standpoint, being nude is not considered obscene behavior".

"Why is the world so afraid of naked people?" Conrad Schmidt, organizer of the event, asked. "There is nothing more peaceful than a naked person on a bicycle. We are more afraid of naked people than we are of cars and global warming and nuclear missiles. Nobody worries about these things, but people are worried about naked cyclists."

and the whole point has been lost.

I'm all for it. More bikes. More nakedness. Less oil. Less cars. Less close-mindeness.

There isn't any point to this other than a bunch of hippies fellating each other's egos. "Oh my god! We're riding bikes NAKED! Now everyone will stop driving and ride bikes!" It's the kind of stupid stunt that gives real activism a bad name. It's almost as bad as when the University of Alberta's student union prez dressed up as a chicken to protest tuition hikes. "Yes! I'm dressed as a giant chicken! Now people will HAVE to take me seriously!" And meanwhile, Joe Average brushes the whole thing off as "stupid hippy crap".

Because cycling naked people are--frankly--a bit disgusting. The chaffing. The sweating. The flying body parts as the wind brushes the dirt up against them. Not to mention if someone takes a spill, they will have a skinned everything and then some.

Almost sympathize with the concept, but it seems like more good intentions gone haywire.

deal with it, dude.

I got me a copy of their manifesto, and you've nailed it word for word.
