Study: The Pill Doesn't Make You Fat

According to a recent study conducted by Family Health International in Research Triangle Park and the University of Leiden, and contrary to what most women think, the birth control pill does not cause substantial weight gain.

Maria Gallo of Family Health International and colleagues reviewed 42 separate trials of women on birth control pills or patches.

There were three trials that compared the real pill to a placebo in women, and none showed the women taking the actual hormones gained any more weight than women taking dummy pills.

Now how about a study to find out if the pill makes you crazy.

of course not....the hormone generally just causes you to want eat more...thus you gain weight. at least that was my experience, and because i noticed what was going on i was able to get by the 10 pound weight gain when i first started taking it.

Hmmm. ... just my observation but;

I noticed that the number of Nutrageous wrappers I found in the car, ,house,trash,bedroom,bathroom etc,.went up twentyfold when an ex of mine went on the pill. That, and there was enough chocolate stockpiled in the house to outlast a nuclear winter. wink biggrin

A lot depends on the prescription. If you have significant weight gain, they switch you to a different pill.

My appetite went up tenfold when I was on it. It was ridiculous. Once I stopped taking it, I stopped eating frosting for breakfast.

Appreciate the article, not sure if it will do any good but a friend of mine relapsed into an eating disorder recently because they were worried about weight gain from starting the pill, I'll have to send her that link.

Uh, presumably such an effect would have caused more weight gain in the trial group than in the control groups, which apparently didn't happen. But perhaps they weren't looking at the right type of pill or something?

I haven't gained any weight due to the pill. I've been using it long enough that I have gained some weight over the years, but I think that has a lot more to do with the aging process and the fact that I went from working at Starbucks to office jobs to unemployment.

I didn't gain weight when I went on the pill.

However, I made up for this when I moved out of my parents' house and briefly adopted the "I'll have ice cream for breakfast if I damn well please, who's going to stop me?!" attitude.

I do, however, think that it has exacerbated my PMS. So I do eat more then. biggrin
