Corporate America Says No Thanks, No Giving

by Hoodoo4102

Employees of Target and Best Buy are voicing their opinions, trying to get a message across to the CEOs of their companies before they’re robbed of their time with family. One in particular, Anthony Hardwick of Omaha, NE, has voiced his displeasure at his employer, Target, and has become the featured petition on Change.org. And while I'm writing this blurb, the petition has just jumped up from a staggering 170,000 to 180,000 signatures of its 200,000 goal. A similar petition inspired by Hardwick’s, posted by Rick Melaragni of Tampa, FL, concerning Best Buy’s opening hours is currently sitting at 14,550 of its 15,000 goal.

Anthony's message is quite clear, and well put:

"A midnight opening robs the hourly and in-store salary workers of time off with their families on Thanksgiving Day. By opening the doors at midnight, Target and Best Buy is requiring team members to be in the store by 11 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. A full holiday with family is not just for the elite of this nation -- all Americans should be able to break bread with loved ones and get a good night's rest on Thanksgiving! Any team member not present for their shift will receive a final warning, or termination of their employment."

While all's quiet on the Target front, Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn writes a heart warming message to Employees and Customers saying*:

"Our customers and employees are, first and foremost, people. We acknowledge that each one is an individual with hopes, dreams, passions, talents, experiences, cultures, faith and loved ones. People don’t celebrate a ‘Happy Holiday’ – they have their own cultural, religious and family traditions. So, why shouldn’t we value and embrace that same level of individuality during the Holidays?"

Thank YOU Brian! It's always so touching to see a CEO open his mouth wide enough just in case he may need to have a Thanksgiving foot for dinner with a side of trimmins'.

So what does this mean for those hard working hourly employees of corporate America? Thanksgiving breakfast, black out curtains, no booze (since getting a DUI on the way to work would make for a whole different kind of Black Friday!), and beddie bye at noon-o-clock so the board can eat meat, slog brew, and belch their American spirit to the tune of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and ESPN's Thursday Night Football -- all for one hour of over time.

If you would like to join Anthony's cause you can do so at www.change.org.

*Since time of writing, Brian Dunn has deleted his own post on his Corp Blog as quoted above and replaced it with another expressing his thanks to the company and his employees for sacrificing their holiday for the company.

Eh, I dunno. I mean, it's retail. Having a horrible holiday is kind of the deal. I can't say for sure, but I'd honestly be surprised if a significant chunk of corporate management weren't working or on call themselves throughout Thanksgiving Day and almost certainly on Black Friday itself. The holiday season generates almost a fifth of the revenue a retail store will earn in any given year. And the economy needs spending right now.

If you want to say something to corporate America, do all your holiday shopping at small, locally owned stores. Get your friends to do the same. It won't make a huge difference in their bottom line, but you can feel better about not feeding the beast.

Not in my experience.

I worked for the late CompUSA at both the corporate hq in Dallas, as well as store management in Miami.

Corporate was closed on holidays. Period. Everything is handled at the store level, that is what's expected of the managers.

A store GM could probably get a regional boss on the phone, but otherwise, forget it.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

The best day ever was giving my 2 week notice, 3 weeks before Thanksgiving!

Sucks that 90% of the American workforce has no real say in their jobs. This sort of thing is only the norm because those up top say it is. The whole attitude of having a store open every day, regardless of any holiday or special circumstance is a bit sickening.

We sacrifice holiday's for other people's convenience. I dunno, just makes me sad.

While the whole midnight Black Friday shift may be new, what about all the people in the restaurant and bar industry that have been working on Thanksgiving and Christmas for as long as I can remember?

I'd much rather have a full holiday with my family, a bit of a nap, then pop off to work at 12.

The only real method of changing this is if no customers showed up at midnight–problem solved–but I think the Black Friday lines will be more ravenous then ever.

There are no holidays on the railroad. 3 shifts a day, every day. However there is double time and half for working a holiday.

I worked a Christmas night shift starting at 11:30 on the 25th. Because of those 30 minutes before the hour the entire shift was overtime. And since the work load was so slow that night we were finished in 2 hours and allowed to go home. Over $500 for 2 hours work. That's the power of having a union.

Not to sound like a douche but in this economy I'm willing to make sacrifices and be thankful that I have a job. Whether its thanksgiving or whatever. There's is troops serving so we don't have to in afghanistan and other shitty places. I know I'm a afghan combat veteran myself. We should just all be thankful some crazy leader hasn't nuclear bombed anything lately. Just voicing my opinion, not saying anyone else is wrong. Thanks

In my opinion this sounds like a bunch of spoiled brats whining cause they had to work a little harder! Times are rough I know for a fact there are thousands of people out there wishing they could work thanksgiving just to make a couple extra bucks to make it thru the month! Working holidays is part of the real world lots of people have to go into work no matter what time of year it is the world doesn't just stop turning cause the pilgrims had dinner with the indians a few hundred years ago.

Who the hell is going shopping at Midnight? And then all the way to sunrise.
This whole Black Friday thing is out of control, you'd think it was the next Twilight movie.

Just open like normal at 4 am. eeekpuke

The people who pay you, get to set policy. When you're an employee that's the company you work for issuing you a paycheck. If you want to get paid, you have to abide by their policies.

When you're a corporation, the people who pay you are called "customers". If you want to be profitable you must abide by their whims.

If customers refused to shop with retailers at ungodly hours then stores would not be open at ungodly hours.

I find it offensive that Best Buy is opening at midnight after Thanksgiving. As such, im not shopping there.Period. The end. I'm in a position to purchase more, high ticket gifts this year than at any time in the past five years. Best Buy isn't getting a cent of it.

The point? Consumers have allowed this. If consumers didn't show up with credit cards in hand, then it wouldn't happen. It's not "just retail". Its Your friends and neighbors that are sending employees to work at midnight. Corporate greed goes hand in hand with consumers generally being greedy assholes themselves..

I concur with you. Not to sound insensitive but I worked retail for many years...black Friday was certainly mandatory. The holidays are crazy...if you don't want to work a lot of hours/overtime than quit. That is how retail is. There are 10 people waiting in line for that position anyway.

This is stupid. You work retail. You work crazy hours. The end.
