Bare or Bushy: Two Women Take Sides

by Nathalie Moody

Trimming, plucking, waxing, shaving. Painful laser procedures to destroy hair follicles. Expensive toxic ritual of cutting, dying, straightening our luscious head hair! Women go through a lot of work to maintain their hair growth. All these techniques are part of an expensive and high maintenance hair management routine, all for the sake of attracting a mate. Guys are not immune to societal pressure to be hairless. Bare chests, bald heads, hairless legs images surround us. The amount of hair a man possesses, along with where it is located, seems to indicate where he will fall on the attraction scale.

Now I embrace the movement away from au naturel days of the 70‘s when way too much hair was everywhere. With all that acid-induced dancing and twirling to the Led or the Dead, I can imagine that intimate times involved a lot tolerance for certain smells and hair in the teeth. (I know..a little vomit came up in my mouth too).

Sitting with my lesbian friend, Carrie, we began discussing all the effort some gals put into this movement towards a hair free-existence. She expresses annoyance at this seemingly ludicrous amount of energy spent on maintaining the hair to stay sexy where women look “pre-pubescent” from the waist down.

Carrie -“Why not keep it natural, Sista? I understand the need to trim it up or shave some off here and there. But if women never shaved that leg hair in the first place, it would be soft and lovely like the fuzz on a peach!”

Nat – “Can you honestly enjoy kissing and loving on a bunch of scratchy, stinky pubic hair? Come on, be honest! There is nothing nicer than smoothly waxed lady!”

Carrie -”No argument there. But honestly, all this pressure to look like that hairless porn star with the ridiculously long fake nails is just wrong and doesn’t do a thing for me. It’s so unrealistic. Most of us will never look like or hook up with that girl or guy. I prefer spending my time making love to a real person. I’m not freaking out about the amount of hair on my body, or the size of my big hips and small tits”.

Nat – “Definitely. Some people spend way too much time on their appearance. But…I love someone that takes care of their business and wants to accentuate their sexy. A freshly shaved, waxed, and bathed body is such a turn-on!”

Carrie – “Of course I might prefer some bareness to the funky hair designs that some woman come up with. You have the stripe, the patch, the triangle and some unnecessary designs like a heart or a lightning bolt! Hilarious”.

So we agree that it just comes down to personal preference. Respect yourself enough to either trim, shave, wax to our heart’s content, let it go, or find a middle ground. To each its own. Of course neither of us are suggesting that we should go hair-free or revert to the hair- infested days of the our hippie predecessors, where the site of hair creeping out of panties and shirts run wild. It just seems the focus should really be about embracing “what cha Momma gave ya” and making it work for you.

I have to agree with what Nat said “....Come on, be honest! There is nothing nicer than smoothly waxed lady!”
I'm 10x more inclined to go down on a woman if its nice and smooth, or well taken care of. I don't mind the small stripes and designs, but I do believe in equality, so I make sure that my mane is also well taken care of. wink

The thing Carrie said about leg hair being like peach fuzz if women never shaved it is way off base. A lot of girls start shaving their legs before their grown-woman leg hair comes in, and what gets shaved is indeed peach fuzz. But puberty will make your leg hair grow in coarser, darker, and sometimes thicker, whether a razor's ever touched your leg or not. Obviously if you let your leg hair grow out it gets softer the longer it gets, but it will still be the coarse body hair of an adult.

Carrie seems to be saying that shaving makes hair coarser or thicker, which is absolutely does not. Shaving has no effect whatsoever on the texture of hair.

Hairy or shave, the only time I've noticed any kind of odor was with woman who had poor hygiene.

Sorry....but I call B.S. on this. You are ignoring the fact that many people...men & women...groom themselves out of a personal preference...completely autonomous from any mating ritual.

I shower, shave & wear clean clothes because I like to be clean.

Also...if a woman is putting herself through expensive, uncomfortable or undesirable procedures not because it's what SHE wants....but because that's what she thinks men want...that's her own dumbass fault. Don't blame men. Not that you, personally, are blaming men...I'm referring to the copout excuse that is propagated by the likes of Cosmopolitan and other such publications...that women suffer all of these indignities because of what "men" find attractive.

Would I prefer a woman with shaved legs? Yes...that's my preference. Would I NOT date a woman who didn't shave her legs....or suggest that she should? Not in a million years.

Mmm I disagree with this statement. I knew a girl in high school who started to shave her arms in maybe around grade 10. By the end of high school her arms were a disaster, and she wasn't only shaving her arms by that point. Not only did it grow back thicker, but after when she would try to wax it etc the hair was so coarse she would kinda bleed.

And for the record, waxing is way different then shaving.

For example, I would never in a million years recommend a girl to shave her upper lip, but waxing/sugaring on the other hand..

It just effects how it feels / looks as it grows back. Shaving is basically "cutting" hair....just closer to the skin surface. It does not effect the hair follicles, which determines the texture and shape of the hair.
It also does not thicken hair, or effect genetics.
Waxing is preferred, because hair is ripped out at the "root" or follicle, and therefor damages it leading to potentially weaker, thinner hairs.

Shaving simply does not have that effect. It cannot. It does not effect the hair follicles in any way. It may appear to make hair coarser because stubble feels coarser to the touch than grown-out hair, but it does not actually change hair growth.

If shaving made your hair grow back courser, I would be sasquatch by now.

Shaving does make your hair thicker at the end, hair starts out as a fine point and gets thicker at its base as it grows. If you let it grow back to it's original length it'll be noticeably thicker at the end and it will be sharp and scratchy due to the fact that it was cut.

Clean shaven/sugared/waxed, without question.

I think the larger issue are guys that expect women to be clean-shaven while expecting their girifriends to choke on a veritable forest while sucking cock. This is all kinds of ridiculous.

Gods, but I hate that word "va-jay-jay". It sounds like something a child would say. *shudder*

I do prefer shaved to unshaved, and was lucky enough at one point to have dated a woman who preferred that, as well.

What you say about guys is probably pretty true. For my own part, I guess I've never shaved down there, and wouldn't know where to start... Mostly, it's the not knowing how best to accomplish the task that keeps me from doing it.

Very carefully.
