Phyllis Schlafly Was Right!!!

Remember the old story about Phyllis Schlafly opposing the Equal Rights Amendment because it would mean that men and women would have to share public restrooms?

At the time, the argument was that this was silly and wouldn't happen. Maybe now we can move on to a better argument--it's silly and no one cares.

This fall, the single-stall bathrooms on American University's campus are getting a name change. In the next month and a half, signs that once designated the toilet for men or women will be replaced with the more general term "restroom."

The change is more than cosmetic. It's part of a movement on university campuses that recognizes that not everyone fits neatly under the labels of male and female, and that some students or staff may feel uncomfortable using a men's or women's restroom. To accommodate them, an increasing number of colleges and universities are designating bathrooms as gender-neutral.


As then, so shall it always be, of course: there are people getting all worked up about this. Presumably these people also have "his" and "her" separate bathrooms in their homes?

People who have benefited from the addition of single-stall bathrooms also include disabled students, families with small children and people who have a caregiver of the opposite sex.


Not to mention people who want to use the bathroom when someone's already in there. Nothing's lamer than standing around next to a locked bathroom when there's a perfectly good bathroom right there but it has a sign that says "men" on the door, so you'll get boy cooties if you use it.

Does anyone out there *really* care what genitals the person who used the bathroom before them had? And if they do, is it really any of their goddamn business anyway? I mean, seriously people. It's not that big a deal.

Bitch_PhD always uses the men's bathroom if the women's is occupied. She can also pee standing up.

Being of the opinion that I shouldn't have to try to pee at the airport while some guy with a rolling suitcase stands next to me nodding to his iPod, or worse, a Politician tapping his foot at me, I think that having anyone in the bathroom with me is weird, no matter the position in which they do their number ones is.

Furthermore, I see no reason to seperate single stall bathrooms at all...Do two guys really go into a bathroom that has one toilet and one urinal? Maybe if it's a father and his four year old son...

This just never really seemed like a front worth fighting on, to me. I think all sorts of unbelievable equalities will be achieved before public restrooms (at least in America) get desegregated.

The coffeeshop I go to on a daily basis has two restrooms. Neither has an assigned gender, although one is much nicer than the other. Everyone just uses whichever they want. They are both single-occupent rooms, but in all honesty, nobody would care if there were multiple stalls.

I am curious what will happen to the urinals if all restrooms become neutral. Will there be more installed, or will they all be removed? Or will we have women working their Kegals and joining the point and shooters

it sounds okay, but then again, I really don't want a chick next to me when I am pooping, or vice versa. What if it was your mom ripping ass in that stall? maybe I'm just not open minded, but I like the idea of privacy when it comes to bathroom etiquette... But then again I have not been faced with this dilemma.

There is a bar in Portland that has unisex restrooms... its pretty crazy stuff. But AWESOME crazy stuff.

There's a snappy remark to be made here comparing gender segregated bathrooms to racially segregated bathrooms that cuttingly implies that the first is an pointless and barbaric as the second. Would someone do me the favor of making that comment? Remember to keep it lighthearted and funny. Thanks.

Yeah, that could be weird. In general, I try not to drop deuce in a public restroom if it's possible to avoid. Sometimes, unfortunately, it's not and if it's like an office situation where people will know that you were responsible for those awsome freckling noises in the stall next to them...

If it's a one stall restroom, I don't really care if they're desegregated.

If they're multi-stall restrooms though, I can understand why they're labeled male and female. I think most folks wouldn't be comfortable taking a crap while someone of the opposite sex is on the other side of a 1 inch hallow steel separation wall and you can see their shoes.

Ok. Here's my question Bitch.

Phyllis Schlafly claimed that if the Equal Rights Amendment was passed it would mean that men and women would have to share public restrooms. But the Equal Rights amendment was never passed.

Now we are sharing restrooms anyway.

How does that make her right ?

I'm not so concerned about having someone of the opposite sex on the other side of a stall than me while I 'drop the kids off at the pool.'. I think its more of a safety thing that worries me. Don't most girls go to public restrooms in groups for that reason? I would hate to walk into a restroom and have some creep molest me (or worse) in there. (not that that couldn't be done anywhere else, I guess...)

Thing is, it's never the other way around. I'm never standing outside a busy men's room while there are stalls open in the women's room.

It's hard to want to give up the convenience that comes with going to a restroom that only services people who pee standing up.

Certainly, I understand that convenience is the enemy of all that is right and good, but DAMN it's hard to want to stand in line for the sake of equality as represented by bathroom usage. Especially if I really have to go.

Maybe we should divide restrooms into Stand-up restrooms and Sit-down restrooms. All the gender equality and NO WAITING!
