Try Reading a Book

Apparently the head of Warner Brothers has declared that WB won't be making any more movies with women in the lead. And you all thought this systemic sexism thing was just a myth! Ha! (Notice that the url is "catfight with girls" and the headline uses the word "bitchslaps"--one could probably come up with a more dismissively sexist way to title the story but it would take some thought). Gloria Allread summarizes the issue in a nutshell:

when movies with men as the lead fail, no one says we'll stop making movies with men in the lead.

Obviously all decent human beings will be boycotting the WB. On the upside, it's fall, and we should all be catching up on our reading instead.

So by way of making this task easier for everyone--because I am nothing if not a giver--here are a few links to Recommended Feminist Reading for all of you. I hereby declare that no one is qualified to argue about feminism unless and until they've read everything on these lists, okay?

First, normal British women talk about their favorite formative feminist reading. Biggest winner? Simone de Beauvoir, specifically The Second Sex, which badly needs a new and better translation but is nonetheless my own personal favorite feminist book in the entire world.

Second, a forthcoming book that, for once, looks at rape from the rapist's point of view: Joanna Bourke's new Rape: Sex, Violence, History. (If you're at all interested in cultural studies, her other books are excellent, by the way). From a review in the Guardian:

"men should step up to the plate. Women are told how to fight back, to get good locks for our doors, to be sensible. It has become our responsibility to make sure 'they' don't do something to 'us'. And when you know that a lot of rapes are committed by husbands, boyfriends and acquaintances - well, it's outrageous. I can't work out why people aren't more outraged. But this epidemic of sexual violence doesn't do men any favours either. Not normalising it, not naturalising it, making it seem abhorrent - that's one of the ways forward."

Just in case it isn't clear, not naturalizing rape means not talking about it as if it's just some force of nature that will inevitably "happen" to women if they aren't careful enough. Someone is doing the raping. That someone is usually men. Stopping rape means dealing with rapists, not victims. The end.

But not really; I've got one more book to recommend. I'm looking forward to reading Sisterhood, Interrupted, which is a history of the women's movement that, according to reviews I've read, puts to rest the idea that somehow there's a new generational divide that's somehow destroying or disrupting feminism. Deborah Siegel's book reportedly shows how feminist disagreement over supposedly "new" issues (e.g. sex) has been around since the beginning of the movement, and how anti-feminist critics have picked up on these conversations to present them as "infighting" in order to misrepresent and undermine feminism as a whole. If you're inclined to buy into the argument that so-called Radical Feminazis (or whatever you want to call them) are ruining the movement for the Good Feminists Who Don't Hate Men, you really should pick up this book.

Because like I said, I forbid you from discussing feminism until you have.

Bitch_PhD is TOTALLY NOT KIDDING. And yes, this will be on the test.

I'll be happy to boycott WB also. Personally, I thought "The Brave One" was rather mediocre, but Jodie Foster is just about the most brilliant and amazing and talented actor/actress ever. "Neanderthal" is too kind a word for any studio that doesn't want to headline her again.

Boycotted. Fuck 'em.

Weren't they responsible for Veronica Mars though? Or at least the CW or whatever was. That show kicked ass and had a kick ass female lead who was smart and kicked ass.
There was a lot of ass kicking.

Adding those books to my book list.

That's Hollywood. It certainly isn't his fault for greenlighting two shitty movie ideas. One about a vigilante. Yawn. Kevin Bacon had his own vigilante movie that came out last month. Anyone remember the name? Exactly.

Invasion was a version of Body Snatchers that was ruined. The original was fine, should have stuck with that plot, instead of fucking it up.

They always blame the actors when they make bad decisions.

This sounds like one guy's foot-in-mouth opinion. I'm sure Warner Bros. will be having him step down soon over this. Despite the development problems, I'm fairly sure they still have Wonder Woman set as a tent-pole film for 2009.

But to play Devil's Advocate here... how many leading actresses can command a box-office hit consistently? Julia Roberts... and.... yep that's it. There are plenty of other actresses that are often hits, but often misses, like Halle Berry and the aforementioned Jodie Foster. But for everyone of them there are 5 Adam Sandler's and Nicholas Cage's which can do the same with a few more hits.

Completely ceasing production of any film with a lead female character is idiotic. But limiting those films to safer more guaranteed hits makes sense. Like it or not, Hollywood is a business and forcing them to make movies that lose money just to satisfy some affirmative action-esque quotient of female leads is counterproductive to equal rights. I'm sure if Julia Roberts came to them and said I want to make a movie, they're going to greenlight it no matter what this guys spewing. But maybe when Halle Berry comes by asking to do Catwoman 2 they'll turn her down.

Here is a list of Warner Bros. movies that are currently (or soon to be) playing in theaters. Think of it as a boycott cheat sheet:

Michael Clayton
The Assassination of Jesse James
The Brave One
Rails & Ties
Fred Claus
August Rush
P.S. I Love You
I Am Legend
The Bucket List
One Missed Call
10,000 BC
Get Smart
The Dark Knight

Gee, these look like some real winners...I don't know if i'll be able to stay away whatever

eh, i'd rather not.
it sounds kind of flaky to me.

i'll add sex & power by susan estrich. the numbers may be getting a bit dated but the content is not and it's a quick read.

as for the WB guy,
puke
is all i have to say.
i'd say i was boycotting them but i probably wouldn't see any of those movies anyway. i'll just make sure now that i absolutely don't.

A lot of those are movies I kind of want to see, actually. Though I am sure they're going to completely ruin "I Am Legend" and "One Missed Call".

It makes little to no sense to boycott those films. Do you know anything about the producers of the films? How many are women? How many of the writers are women? Directors? On and on. By the time it has any effect on the idiot at the top, you have killed many of those who could fight the battle from the inside.

um...how the fuck can you blame Jodie Foster for sucking in a movie about revenge...when have revenge flicks ever been good or successful? And furthermore, when was the last time Body Snatchers was successful other than 1982? It's like not allowing critics to review movie because they may damage profits, or blaming the audience for not bringing more friends to the movie...a movie is going to suck no matter who is in the lead role. I'm sorry you guys dropped the ball, but another Christmas Comedy or Vin Diesel Film is not the answer!

And he better fucking make ten movies with Women in the lead as well as flop a few retarded ass movies with men in the lead sometime before Next July or I will personally shoot a batman grappling hook at his balls.
