Facebook: Feeding Babies is Obscene

Facebook has made a bad mistake. Apparently they've been deleting pictures of breastfeeding mamas and babies, and in some cases even deleting the accounts of said mamas. This, apparently, because they (1) consider breasts obscene, and (2) can't differentiate between a titty shot and a picture of someone feeding a baby.

"Photos containing an exposed breast do violate our Terms and are removed," she said.

It's not clear what constitutes an "exposed breast", which has the lactivists baffled.

Facebook did not respond to emails requesting further clarification but several group members have reported that their images were removed despite the fact they contained no nipple.

As anyone who's ever had a baby knows, you Do Not Fuck With Breastfeeding Mamas, who are one of the most easily organized groups on the internet. After all, websurfing is one of the few things you can do easily while nursing a baby. And mamas who breastfeed are pretty damn militant (rightly so), since it takes a certain amount of chutzpah just to overcome the "omg, titties!" thing and decide to nurse in the first place.

I predict that Facebook's going to change their mind about this policy within a week. So if you're on Facebook and agree that they should learn the difference between porn and breastfeeding, you'd better hurry up and join the Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene! group; since the original article linked at the top of this story appeared three days ago, the group's gotten almost 10,000 members, who've posted over 600 breastfeeding photos.

Bitch_PhD breastfed her kid for two and a half years.

What is so wrong with feeding breasts?

Then the breasts come up to you at the park and beg for food when you just want to be left alone to read your book, and to make matters worse they just poop on your head.

I'm truly amazed at the amount of people on THIS site that are uncomfortable seeing a woman's naked breast with a baby latched on?!? You all are quite obviously okay with naked breasts on their own. So, what exactly makes it dirty, the baby?! confused

This was exactly my reaction, too.

Hey, got to love the world.

In one world it is an outrage to post breastfeeding pics on the net / or right to post pics.

In the other mothers don't have enough food to actually be able to breastfeed.

Spend your time worring about the women of Africa, than some "fringe" elements in the 1st world worried about having the right to do something meaningless.

This has to be the most vacuous post ever.

I could only get through the first two pages of posts before I was too pissed to read more.

I breastfed my babies and it is beautiful and natural, it is what they are designed to do!!! Seeing as we check out titties every day here it seems odd that people are so fucking offended by mothers nurturing their children around them. I mean one chick wrote not to do it on the bus near her??!?!??!

if my baby is hungry than I am gonna damn well feed it whether her sensitive nature is offended or not .... stay out of public if you are that freaking sensitive...

to that girl....look down, see them? they are for feeding and its ok, its not weird or freaky. nursing moms are not making a political statement when they feed their babies in public, they are just doing what comes natural to them. and maybe you should look at yourself to see why something so natural is so offensive to you?

Haha, oh. This is my favorite argument.

"Things are worse _____! You can't be mad about _____!"

Of course Brett54, she can't possibly be upset about something here if something worse is happening elsewhere! You can never be angry about anything in that case, because Africans are starving somewhere.

Maybe it's just several years of SG exposure, but I don't think I would even notice if some woman was baring her breasts in public to feed her children. Are there really people who worry about stuff like this?

The thing is with breastfeeding, which MaryJane has pointed out in her first post, is that it takes a long time, and you need to do it when your baby is hungry- which could be any time. There really aren't that many private places a woman can go to feed her child when they're out and about, and even if there was, why would they want to hide themselves away like they were doing something gross? Honestly, if you were out in a cafe or in a pub with your mates would you want to bugger off into some little cubicle for half an hour so you can feed the baby without offending tards?

Paintings of the Virgin Mary suckling the Christ child, many showing nipple and areola or completely exposed breasts, were not only hung in churches, but commisioned by those same churches. Where have we come as a society that a mother feeding her infant in the best most nutrionally sound way has become indecent? Have we as a society become even more restrictive that the medieval Catholic Church that all but crushed the human spirit and gave us the Dark Ages? There are societies still living in the Dark Ages today, do we want to join them?

As far as I have seen on Facebook, there are far more lewd things going on there babies nursing. Why single this out and not the hordes of lonely women showing their talent for wearing g-strings with mini skirts and push-up bras. If Facebook wants to clean up their act, they should do it across the board in a fair and even-handed manner.

Now, for bodily functions, the day that anything you excrete from any hole in your body can feed, nourish and sustain another human life, I will fight for your right to be able to do it as you see fit, free from harassment, persecution or discrimination.
