Facebook: Feeding Babies is Obscene

Facebook has made a bad mistake. Apparently they've been deleting pictures of breastfeeding mamas and babies, and in some cases even deleting the accounts of said mamas. This, apparently, because they (1) consider breasts obscene, and (2) can't differentiate between a titty shot and a picture of someone feeding a baby.

"Photos containing an exposed breast do violate our Terms and are removed," she said.

It's not clear what constitutes an "exposed breast", which has the lactivists baffled.

Facebook did not respond to emails requesting further clarification but several group members have reported that their images were removed despite the fact they contained no nipple.

As anyone who's ever had a baby knows, you Do Not Fuck With Breastfeeding Mamas, who are one of the most easily organized groups on the internet. After all, websurfing is one of the few things you can do easily while nursing a baby. And mamas who breastfeed are pretty damn militant (rightly so), since it takes a certain amount of chutzpah just to overcome the "omg, titties!" thing and decide to nurse in the first place.

I predict that Facebook's going to change their mind about this policy within a week. So if you're on Facebook and agree that they should learn the difference between porn and breastfeeding, you'd better hurry up and join the Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene! group; since the original article linked at the top of this story appeared three days ago, the group's gotten almost 10,000 members, who've posted over 600 breastfeeding photos.

Bitch_PhD breastfed her kid for two and a half years.

you mean "met" right? confused

anyways as anomalisa pointed out- taking a dump is not the equivalent of feeding your baby. eating and taking a shit are not equal in the slightest. technicallyand literally, they're opposite of eachother. everybody poops, but not everybody breastfeeds.

why? well, part of the reason is lack of education on the matter, or women having been conditioned by society to view that breasts are sexual, therefore they deny their child of what's best.

pics of nursing moms can be an education tool (yes, even on sites like facebook) that women can see and in a sense learn that nursing is an ok thing- especially if they see enough of it going on. furthermore, the more moms who are educated, the more babies are nursed, and the less likely they will become obese later in life, the more likey they will have better immune systems, etc.

everyone knows how to shit...but not everyone knows about how good and appropriate it is to nurse a child. that is evident from some of the ignorant posts here.

I've seen some public bathrooms full of evidence disproving that statement.

I have no kids. So I have never breastfed a baby. I plan on doing so whenever I am lucky enough to have them. But WHY (and i am legitimately asking this question) would you put pictures of your baby breastfeeding on your Facebook account? Myspace, oh definitely. But Facebook?

I guess this is just a beauty I cannot appreciate until I go through it myself. Oh well.

oh and to edit I am not saying it isn't a beautiful thing at all. Don't want to be attacked by the Breastfeeding Mamas. Just don't know why you feel the need to share that moment with the world.

Because it's a cute and often tender moment showing the bond between mother and child. It shows what's important in her life. It shows who she is. That's why...

It's like the people who post pictures of themselves drinking, or doing other stuff. It's what they do.

I don't know. I am not being an ass here, but I really think comparing drinking beer and breastfeeding is not, they're not the same category. I agree, breastfeeding is a tender moment, (wouldn't really say cute, might change my mind when I'm a mother but to me right now it's just awkward). But to me, having sex with someone I love is a very tender moment. I don't take pictures of it (normally) and post them on facebook (ever).

But hey, do what you want. I guess it would be fine to let them post those pics, long as you get fair warning before you get an eyeful of something you don't want to see.

Again, not against the issue here.

That's sorta the point... pooping is an experience shared by every single human being on earth, almost every single day. If an activity that's such an universal part of the human experience throughout an entire lifetime can still be considered improper for public display, then claiming the fact that everyone is breastfed as a child isn't sufficient to defend the public display of it.

However, there are bathrooms almost everywhere you go, but very few places have designated breastfeeding areas. That's a definite problem.

I agree with this article, and going one further, say that breasts themselves aren't obscene anyway.

How is it that people seem to forget the simple fact that breasts are there for feeding...........everything else we enjoy them for should just be counted among those lucky accidents of life, certainly among the top three lucky accidents of life, but still just a lucky accident nonetheless.

I'm totally joining that group.

well due to the fact that there are not designated breastfeeding areas, women are forced to nurse out in the open when their children are crying out in hunger. nursing out in the open does indeed need defending, and the more people that defend it, the more accepted it will become. the more educated people are on such a matter, and the more they know it's ok to so many people (posting pics of it is an effort to show it's acceptable), the more likely they are to become accepting of it themselves, and possibly defend it as well. or they can be ignorant, despite the fact that they are made aware of the benefits and the real need for a child to eat immediately when they are hungry, and go on flaming the mamas who do it/post pics in an effort to make it more widely accepted. lawmakers in 48 of the 50 states have laws that protect breastfeeding mamas, so pics and protests regarding nursing aren't going unheard. there's something to be said for that. there are tv commercials/pro breastfeeding campaigns on tv showing nursing women in the act to raise awareness on a subject that really needs it. that's not wrong. i'll post pics wherever i can to help raise awareness about breastfeeding. i have a breastfeeding calendar- yes all 12 months FULL of women nursing their beautiful and healthy babies. breastfeeding is truly the picture of health when it comes to giving a baby a good start- why wouldn't i want to share that with people??

Defecating stinks and attracts flies. It is also a biohazard. It probably didn't take much for our primitive ancestors to figure out that shitting should be done somewhere other than in the middle of the village. So pooping in private became part of the world's culture because it kept things smelling better, kept away the flies, and helped prevent the transmission of disease.

Breast feeding on the other hand doesn't produce offensive odors and I don't think you have to fear stepping into a puddle of breast milk and getting it all over your shoe after a mother breast feeds. It can be a biohazard if the mother has HIV, but how often do you see an out of control nipple squirting milk all over the place? So I don't think there's much to fear about the milk itself. So then what is it about breast feeding that alarms so many people in the Western culture? It's the boobies!

Let me add that sneezing is also natural and most people don't freak out if you sneeze in their presence. Why? Part of it is perhaps because it doesn't produce any nasty odors. It wasn't until just recently in history that we realized that it spreads germs. So the world's cultures didn't evolve to freak out when someone sneezes, however we do say "God bless you" and such because a sneeze invites in demons through your nostrils--at least that's what some people used to think.

i breastfeed in public, i also have pics of me nursing my baby at a music festival, while camping, at home, at the zoo, all over the place. i will post them wherever i damn well please and if people don't like it they needn't click on my profile or this

. boobs are for breastfeeding, and like it or not it's an everyday part of motherhood, just like beer guzzling is for college life. sometimes it feels like a pic of me nursing my child is what best defines me at this juncture in my life. i do it everyday, it takes much of my time, and if you hang out with me you'll see me doing it a lot more than i do anything else. there's nothing gross or inappropriate about it. if breastfeeding pics are considered inappropriate, then a pic of feeding a baby a bottle should be considered the equivalent of whipping out a dildo- no?
