Or At Least It Ought to Be

What's the connection between Bush's assholish attempt to deny health insurance to children and reproductive rights?

Glad you asked.

And finally, apparently [LIST]Hillary Clinton is not only saying that we need to make sure that reproductive health be part of any planned health care reform, but--for those of you who've forgotten or never realized--the very existence of the SCHIP came out of the work she did after her "failed" attempt at health care reform during her husband's first administration. (And yes, that's her taking credit for it--but don't worry, right wing nutjobs as well as lefties who support other Democratic candidates back this up.)

And now the latest news about poverty rates now includes information that further puts the lie to Bush's bullshit about not wanting to expand SCHIP to cover those above the poverty line.

The nation's poverty rate declined for the first time this decade, but the number of Americans without health insurance rose to a record high of 47 million in 2006, according to Census figures released today.

Children fared even worse. Last year 11.7 percent of youngsters under 18 years had no health insurance, up from 10.9 percent in 2005. The percentage of uninsured children has increased two years in a row after declining for at least five years, according to the Census data.

How is that possible?

"Despite SCHIP's earlier success in decreasing the number of uninsured children, their numbers have risen for the second straight year because of a decline in employer-based coverage."

So people are working harder, earning less

(The increase in this year's median household income appeared to be largely due to a jump in the number of people in each household taking on full-time jobs, rather than a rise in wages. In fact, earnings of both men and women declined by just over 1 percent.

The drop in the poverty rate from 12.6 percent in 2005 to 12.3 percent in 2006, meanwhile, was almost entirely driven by a decrease in poverty for those over 65),

and fewer jobs are offering health coverage.

HIllarycare--or fuck, any kind of national program, whether a single-payer system or nationalized hospitals--is starting to look pretty goddamn good, don't you think?

Bitch_PhD still isn't sure who she supports in the primary, but is pretty sure that Hillary's the best choice soley from a reproductive rights perspective.

I have met two women in my life who had 4 children by 4 different daddies each, both by the time they were 21. I know it's true... I've seen it... and I really don't care if you believe it or not. You can assume that I'm lying, and I can assume that you were raised like veal. It doesn't matter either way, cuz we would both be wrong.

You completely missed the point of what reprobate was saying to you. It doesn't matter if you know five or ten women who have 4 children by 4 different dadies, because it is STILL irrelevant to the issues of birth control or abortion.

I think people should be able to move to wherever they would like to, but I hope you are doing some investigative homework on France to see if there are any issues or problems that you might face as an American moving there.

We're not exactly loved all over the globe. frown

On the part where the author has put in "Health Care is a right and not a Privilege;" since when? I don't remember anything in the US Constitution saying anything about health care. Health Care is like getting a lawyer......you get what you pay for and if you can't pay for one, one will be appointed to you. Same goes for emergency rooms and most medical social programs. You might get lucky and get a good one or even a mediocre one, but if you get a bad one....... a lawyer is what ya need. wink

On the other part concerning contraception........if you are stupid enough to have unprotected sex in this day and age..........you must be a fucking moron!!! It's been what 25 years that they (public health officials from both sides of the aisle) have said to use condoms no matter what? no wonder 1 in 3 people have herpes and AIDS is still spreading like crazy. I like sex just like everyone else.........but even in heat of the moment it takes what 30 seconds to 2 minutes to open up and put on a condom?

When it comes to abortion.......hey this is a woman's choice, but I think is should be discussed with all parties involved and maybe with family members also. This is a tough moral decision that should not be taken lightly. I have never met a woman who was proud of their abortion........but it is still her choice.

Children without health care is a shame.........some of the blame is on the parents especially if their family is above the poverty line and their family's employer has health insurance. I know some Insurance premiums are a bitch to pay.........but if you are willing to sacrifice your child's health for that plasma T.V. or that new I-phone or whatever. I know that if it was me and I had a child living in my home......that child would come first. He/she might not get everything to be trendy and cool, but they would have health, dental, and vision insurance.
