This Shit Fucking Pisses Me Off

Yesterday, Rahodeb posted about the forthcoming study of how Angry Women (aka "bitches"wink make both men and women feel all insecure and threatened, and how insecure threatened men and women punish Angry Women by paying them shit.

It gets even better, though. Women, you see, know this--what with our not being idiots and all--and as a result, we often don't ask for what we're worth because--surprise!--negotiating our salaries is one of those things that makes Other People think we're bitchy!

Folks in the "institutionalized sexism's all in your head, dearie, and maybe if you didn't hate men so much you'd realize that" camp are fond of pointing out that the pay gap may be attributable to women not asking for as much money as men. Which we don't, on average.

The traditional explanation for the gender differences that Babcock found is that men are simply more aggressive than women, perhaps because of a combination of genetics and upbringing. The solution to gender disparities, this school of thought suggests, is to train women to be more assertive and to ask for more. However, a new set of experiments by Babcock and Hannah Riley Bowles, who studies the psychology of organizations at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, offers an entirely different explanation.

Their study, which was coauthored by Carnegie Mellon researcher Lei Lai, found that men and women get very different responses when they initiate negotiations. Although it may well be true that women often hurt themselves by not trying to negotiate, this study found that women's reluctance was based on an entirely reasonable and accurate view of how they were likely to be treated if they did. Both men and women were more likely to subtly penalize women who asked for more -- the perception was that women who asked for more were "less nice".

"What we found across all the studies is men were always less willing to work with a woman who had attempted to negotiate than with a woman who did not," Bowles said. "They always preferred to work with a woman who stayed mum. But it made no difference to the men whether a guy had chosen to negotiate or not."

I assume that a lot of nice women are threatened by us bitches because of that whole guilt-by-association thing; I bet there's not a girl on this board who hasn't had, at some point, to play the "aww, baby" reassurance game with some jerky guy who couldn't tell the difference between his Bitchy Ex and the woman in front of him. The catch, of course, is that the nice girls get fucked over too because hey: if you don't ask for what you want, ain't no guy (or girl, she murmurs reassuringly) in the world that's gonna just hand it to you.

The guys don't have any excuse, though. Fuck 'em.

Bitch_PhD is a bitch, and damn proud of it.

I don't like involving myself in discussions when I have not done the research, but I did come across several articles that indicated the gender-wage gap was actually closer than people once thought. In fact, the article stated that women make slightly more than men do. The popular research that says otherwise actually took the average wages made by all women and average wages made by all men and compared them side-by-side, without any metrics that could account for differences in education, experience, or occupation. In such a slanted statistical analysis, there would be a huge difference between the two. However, without having hard sources to back-up these statements, I really cannot stand by them very well; I just felt like putting my two-cents in.

I am interested to see how this new research changes things, though. I hope with this information we can close the gender-wage gap and encourage equitable treatment of each other in the workplace.

Actually, Formus, I am all for equality. What I am not for is gender bashing during the process to get there.

It's much like blacks working towards eliminating racism but calling whites "honkeys" while expecting to be taken respectfully.

Name-calling and hostility is not the way to a peaceful resolve.

I believe you are mistaken as to what self-esteem is.

You should look up the word "narcissist" sometime.

You've just gone from expecting to be treated as an equal to expecting special treatment.

Unless I misread your intent with that staetment.

when has she ever even hinted that she wants to be treated as an equal?

Hush.

There's an issue here worth acknowledging, and we really don't need to make this all about Prof. Bitch.

And as someone who's happy to take her on when I feel it's appropriate, can I please say that right now, it's worth acknowledging how men and women respond to men and women who are other than sweetness and light, and the implications of that (and the fact that we all respond differently, on average, to men as compared to women who are other than sweetness and light) -- and that gratuitous sniping at the Professor is kind of unhelpful at this juncture.

I think Prof. Bitch's sense of self-importance is way overinflated, but again, we could, y'know, not make this about her.

But yeah. It is sad that the original point of the story has become lost because of the way it was delivered.

I agree. This comes across as being an impulsive article that was written in a moment of rage. It would have benefitted intellectually from the author taking a more emotionally objective stance - possibly waiting a day or two after reading the article which offended her, before submitting this one.

I know myself, though, that when faced with an attitude that appalls you, it's not easy to resist flinging out the vitriol.

perhaps this has less to do with gender based pay and more to do with the way our society teaches negotiation skills to children... Girls should be given the same early childhood experiences that boys are kiss

thats not to say that men with inferiority complexes don't run things poorly eeek (that much we all know) but more to say that the same "men" whatever tend to make poor staffing decisions regardless of gender.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

perhaps if we stopped promoting incompetent shit heads into positions that affect the welfare of others the whole gender/age/sexual orientation/religious bigotry thing would have less affect on societies.

Is "honky" really a hostile term? I mean, watch reruns of The Jeffersons or Sanford and Son. I think that white folks like myself and my relatives need to be reminded, with great frequency, how fucking ridiculous we are.

Honky.

Oh......oh no you di'in't!

You can't seriously compare dialog on The Jeffersons with trying to communicate the importance of racial equality to a race that is oppressing you.

In regards to the story though, I'm a little confused as to how current the study was and how relevant it is to today's times.

One link I found suggests that this study was done approximately 10 years ago.

AND, if you read this study, it wasn't applicable to any real businesses. These were all volunteers in a study. They weren't actual hiring authorities nor were they actual would be co-workers.

The negotiated "salary" was actually just a fee to participate in the study. A whopping $3-$10.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
