A group of New Zealand vegans are taking their dietary choices to bed. In a brand-spanking new phenomenon being called "vegansexuality," some animal-friendly Kiwis are choosing "not to be sexually intimate with non-vegan partners whose bodies, they say, are made up of dead animals."
One vegan respondent from Christchurch said: "I believe we are what we consume, so I really struggle with bodily fluids, especially sexually."
Another Christchurch vegan said she found non-vegans attractive, but would not want to be physically close to them.
"I would not want to be intimate with someone whose body is literally made up from the bodies of others who have died for their sustenance," she said.
Okay, hang on just a minute, here. I'm a strict vegetarian—a vegan, for all intents and purposes (any animal products that make their way into my diet do so accidentally, at this point), and while I'm not too keen on swapping saliva with my boyfriend just after he's eaten a big, juicy burger, I find this vegansexuality thing to be verging on the absurd. Unless these vegansexuals are engaging in some kind of cannibalistic, Praying Mantis-inspired sex, I don't really see what the problem is. You're not eating your partner, are you? You're not wearing a jacket or a pair of shoes made out of your partner, right?
The revelation of this new little movement came through the research of Annie Potts, co-director of the New Zealand Centre for Human and Animal Studies at Canterbury University.
Cruelty-Free Consumption in New Zealand: A National Report on the Perspectives and Experiences of Vegetarians and other Ethical Consumers asked 157 people nationwide about everything from battery chickens to sexual preferences.
Many female respondents described being attracted to people who ate meat, but said they did not want to have sex with meat-eaters because their bodies were made up of animal carcasses.
"It's a whole new thing – I have not come across it before," said Potts.
Their bodies are made up of animal carcasses? That's just ridiculous. While I can understand being hesitant about romantic involvement with a meat-eater due to potential health issues like heart disease, hypertension, and colon cancer, viewing their bodies as "made up of animal carcasses" is taking it a bit far. I picture a zombie-like creature with a ham hock for a heart and chickens feet for eyes.
"When you are vegan or vegetarian, you are very aware that when people eat a meaty diet, they are kind of a graveyard for animals," she said.
"Sorry, I don't do the hot beef injection, but I do give great cabbage head."
Yeah, it gets pretty confusing when the quotes go several users deep.
Once you learn the coding, it's sometimes easier to just do it manually. I've screwed it up to where it looks like someone said something they didn't....and I don't even work in politics.

Perhaps you should. I've seen far less tact in the oval office the past 7 years. ZING!
Too funny... I wonder how they will screen out the 'meaters' if any can tolerate such intolerant views. As a libertine I am glad to tolerate their ideology but I don't accept it as sane any more than they would judge me as such whilst I consume a yummy t-bone. Also as someone mentioned before what do these folks think about animal violence and such... Ideologies like this have as their root some manifestation of self hatred. This is typically derived from being unable to accept human nature (communism fails has failed always will for the same reason). If humans never ate meat we would not have a big fatty noodle in our skulls that would enable any of us to even participate in this inane topic.
some people who identify as, oh lets pick Republican, probably wouldn't consider hooking up with a Democrat because they would feel like they didn't share some essential, core values and therefore wouldn't really connect with one another. other Republicans don't feel that way. and both are valid. the Republicans who will tap liberal ass aren't lesser Republicans for it and the ones that want to fraternize with like minded individuals aren't kooks.
now if they go and call themselves Reagansexuals, sure, that's a little wacky.

Sorry Gringo, I know... I did a piss poor job of deleting the super secret coding that properly attributes quotes.
That was one Young_Gershwin who made the claim.
Yip that was me. Maybe "essential" isn't the right word. I just meant that realistically it makes a lot of sense for humans to eat meat. Our teeth are designed to tear flesh and our eyes are in the front of our heads (like a tiger) not on the side (like a cow). Basically we have the physiology of a predator. I don't think it's wrong for anyone to adopt a vegetarian diet, mind you. There are many ways to live a very healthy life without meat. Just for me being an omnivore makes sense.
So, by buying Fido or Mr. Scratches a meal, the vegan has become a hypocrite.
being vegan isnt about achieving some "perfect veganess."
to live without impacting another living soul is pretty much impossible. its more about doing the best you can, within the parameters of not consuming animal products.

wow.... i agree we are naturally omnivores, but take an anthropolgy class.
yes we have stereocopic vision, but so do many many herbivores.
and our bodies are not so great for predation. we cant really run that fast, and our teeth arent that great for tearing meat (like a wolf or tiger). our main advantage when it comes to hunting is our brain. unfortunately, out brains are what also made us good prey thousands of years ago. obviously, thats been worked out but i have to disagree that we are built for predation
either way you look at it something is dying to keep you alive.
i'm a vegetarian but DAMN some people are idiots.
I'm going to post a non-response to this by saying "I don't even feel I need to make a distinction between how plants and animals are alive."
I will, though. Animals are fairly clearly sentient. That is to say, they can feel. In particular, they can feel pain. Plants might be, but they've never managed to convey that information if they are.
Now, personally, I don't think that's the important distinction as far as food sources go (although it is definitely of some importance when considering how to raise the food sources and subsequently convert them into food). But then, I'm not a vegan.
