Michael Savage Thinks Immigration Activists Should be Put Into… Captivity

Hee hee. I’m just kidding y’all. Right-wing shock idiot Michael Savage doesn’t think that activists should be put into a poorly-reviewed torture porn opus. Rather, he wishes that certain activists who participated in a hunger strike for immigrant rights should die. Seriously.

Bay Area immigrant rights advocates say radio host Michael Savage should be fired for using hateful language when suggesting supporters of an immigration reform bill who fasted in San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza last week should starve to death.

During a July 5 broadcast of "The Savage Nation," his nationally syndicated talk show, Savage said, "I would say let them fast till they starve to death ... because then we won't have a problem about giving them green cards because they're illegal aliens."

Well, I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that the protesters were probably a bunch of hippie San Francisco liberal pussies who want to open our borders and let a bunch of dirty Mexicans take our jobs. And if that’s the case, fuck ‘em for advocating amnesty. Let ‘em starve. Am I right?

Well, no.

The immigrant students fasted to show support for the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, which would make higher education or military service a part of the path to citizenship for young illegal immigrants. The DREAM Act was introduced in Congress in 2001 and most recently stalled in June as part of the Senate's hotly debated immigration reform bill.

In other words, they were arguing that young people who have marketable skills or prove their loyalty to America should have a shot at becoming citizens. How horrible!

Savage is just doing what he always does, of course. He stirs up controversy by advocating for the most vile and callous ideas, and by defending the indefensible. This isn’t much different than anyone else who deals in shock. After all, no one has ever gone broke playing to stupid people’s baser instincts. That said, even among the vast intellectual wasteland that are the right-wing political radio smut-peddlers, Savage is one of a kind.

Here are a sampling of some of his more intelligent tidbits:

"The next time you’re in your backyard grilling hot dogs, don’t be surprised if your Korean neighbor is actually grilling his dog. That’s the way things are done in Korea.”

"You’re the ones who did it. You liberals are the descendents of Adolf Hitler, only you don’t know it. You’re the most dangerous people on planet Earth. I am your enemy. I am your worst nightmare. I will expose you. I know who you are and I know you’re suicidal and I’m going to expose you until this government acts finally to stop you. I am not kidding you. I’m telling it as it is."

He called affirmative action "The Fairness for Dummies Act"

"We need another brave Senator, like McCarthy, whom history has proven to be a loyal patriot."

"I'm beginning to think that women should be denied the vote. Their hormones rage; they are too emotional."

Or how about some of his choicer thoughts on the tsunami disaster in 2004:

You could take the argument that it's God's will, it's too bad and let's move on. And then let others help them. They're not in our sphere of interest.
[…]
You could argue, maybe this is God's hand, because some of their brethren struck Christian America. Maybe God speaks the truth but waits. Seeks the truth and waits.
[…]
Many of the countries and the areas in these countries that were hit by these tidal waves were hotbeds of radical Islam. Why should we be helping them destroy us? ... I think what we're doing is feeding our own demise. ... I truthfully don't believe in foreign aid.
[...]
We shouldn't be spending a nickel on this, as far as I'm concerned. ... I don't want one nickel of my money going over there. ... I am sick of being bled to death by every damn incident on the earth.

So clearly, he’s a very classy guy. While advocating the death of peaceful activists is (amazingly) not the worst thing the guy has said, one would think that someone as allegedly pro-free speech as Savage would have a little bit more sympathy for folks who are exercising their constitutional rights. I guess those who chose to speak freely are only worthy of praise (or, in this case, life) if he agrees with their message. What else is new?

Of course at base, Savage is simply another hate-filled idiot intent on lowering the bar for civilized debate ever further that it already has been. He’s a parasite on our national dialogue, leeching off whatever shred of rationality and compassion may remain within it. And that’s fine. Everyone has a part to play, I suppose. His part is legitimizing lunacy and hate.

Savage’s remarks aren’t getting the national ink that Imus’ did, so I doubt he has to worry about losing his job. But wouldn’t it be nice if he had to worry about a pink slip not because of this idiocy but because people got fed up with this garbage and stopped listening?

You... you... BASTARD!

we just can't do what we do all the time without being able to detach our feelings and moral judgements (but not ethics, I know I took PR too) from our legal responsibilities.

Maybe it carries over. Or maybe we ended up doing what we do because we were born that way

Sure. Though I prefer to think we do what we do because we're just too awesome not to.

That said, I never really understood hunger strikes either. Not because I don't understand how they've been effective but because I know within the first 4 hours or so I'd be ordering in for Pizza.

From his website:

Trained as a scientist, he holds Master's degrees in medical botany and medical anthropology and earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in Epidemiology and Nutritional Science. He spent decades searching and saving tropical rainforests.

Ok, that is almost certainly BS. Firstly I can't find any record of this guy writing a paper on rainforest conservation. Secondly how does having 3 medical degrees make you a conservationist in the first place?! I (almost) have a masters degree in Conservation myself, by this logic it would make me qualified to practice medicine because all science is apparently the same in the pea between this guys ears.

That is very interesting.
If you spent decades in the field doing research, as "searching and saving" implies you probably would have written thousands of papers, been published in scientific trade journals hundreds of times and probably written a few books. Wouldn't you ?
Shouldn't be too hard to find something.

Well....he's written books. They're not quite the kind you mean, though. I was quite impressed. His book "Savage Nation" (or possibly "A Savage Nation", I forget) surely holds the World Record on most lies packed into a single back-of-the-book blurb.

No, I seriously mean scientific literature.
I found absolutely nothing as well.
Unless he went by the name Michael Alan, or possibly Alan Weinier? I did find a few anthropology papers mentioning an Alan Weiner. But I'm pretty sure the Alan Weiner that I've repeatedly found is Chair of Biochemistry at The University of Washington, not Savage.

I'm not actually a scientist, someone in the field would have a much better idea where to look. But there should be something !!, lots I imagine.

Any Berkeley Alumni here to look him up ? I don't have access to real alumni records but curiously The wikipedia entry for notable Berkeley Alumni lists him as Michael Savage- Non-fictional broadcasting, Grad 1978. Not Michael Weiner accomplished research scientist. I had supposed it's been updated to reflect their current occupations but that doesn't seem the case for most of the other people listed.

Anyway, I'm still finding that curious. No matter how obnoxious a radio personality you become in life, a 20+ year career as a scientist doesn't usually just disappear.
Especially considering how outspoken the man is, I would imagine the guy would have been a pretty divisive scientist as well.

Edit: Nevermind, I finally found some mention of it.

Here

He has a nationally syndicated AM radio talk show called Savage Nation, a Ph D. in Nutritional Ethnomedicine from the University of California, Berkeley, is a respected and often cited source of herbal lore information, has authored at least 19 books, . . .

^^^ Yeah, that's very strange. My father-in-law is a scientist of note, and his publications, are easily accessed with a cursory search. Where's all the peer reviewed stuff?

Anyway, I'm trying to decide if it is more reprehensible if this is just his schtick, or if he actually holds these beliefs.

Ah, I see he once did the "McCarthy is awesome" shpell. Joe McCarthy was one of the very first historical figures I ever studied in depth growing up, and it amazes me that anyone could possibly think he was anything more then a pathetic, angry, vengeful little man.

Yeah , initially I was searching more strictly for peer-reviewed papers or published articles in science journals. And was really drawing blanks.
Now finding all the books he published I'm almost more surprised by the lack of peer review trail. But, as far as my basic thought of total fraud goes, I suppose all the books published meets my expectations of a 20+ year career as a scientist.

I still think he's fecal.

^^^ No one can be barred from publishing anything they want. It doesn't make him a respected scientist. So, I'm pretty skeptical.

True.
His current rantings seem so contrary to his philosophies seemingly expressed in his former publications that I really do wonder about the syphilis angle that darwinsjoke brought up. Was that serious ? It does seem like on a cursory glance the guy has had some major personality shift.

But you all miss the black and white of this situation. In America we have the right to say what we want , its called FREEDOM OF SPEECH . And if you don't like what you hear either speak against it or don't listen . Becouse if you stop him from speaking freely sooner or later someone won't like what you say and will stop you . And then no one will be able to speak the truth at all .
