There are plenty of sub-categories in the Horror genre. You can only do so much with zombies and spirits. When a movie is released that puts you in an enviorment that makes you second guess every single person in the world...that is what is truly terrifying. Because the situations in movies like those (Captivity, Saw, Hostel, Texas Chainsaw, etc.) could potentially happen.

If you take (thinking of films released within the last 5 years..) Dawn of the Dead in comparison to Saw or Hostel the fictional elements in Dawn of the Dead make it somewhat stale. Are people going to rise from the dead and swipe off the entire nation? It could happen, but doubtful. The fact that I could be kidnapped at any moment and tortutred for no apparent reason by some twisted person seems like the world we live in. And because of that why shouldn't people watch? There are people out there that commit crimes such as those, why deny people from seeing that.

This film's detractors are turning out to be its greatest asset, with regard to its marketing.

I wouldn't even have given this film a second thought if everyone weren't so up in arms about it.

I'm not trying to deny anyone watching anything they want. I'm not trying to put down, categorize or in any way belittle people, I'm just trying to understand. No one has given me a reason WHY they like this type of thing. I like chocolate because it tastes good. I like women because I'm a hetero male who's wired that way. I like motorcycles because I enjoy the rush of acceleration. Why do people like to watch other people suffer? I just don't understand.
Where's Zarth when I need him?

Watching these movies for the thrill factor of "it could happen to me" is fine. But you know there is a handful of people that are watching them for all of the wrong reasons, and that's why people refuse to support movies like this.

I thought I just answered you though?

I'll say it from my personal point of view so you completely understand.

The fictional aspect in these movies is lost. It makes you question the world and people around you. To have yourself lost in an enviorment for 2 hours full of events and situations that could actually happen to you is the most entertaining part of these films. It's not about getting great joy in seeing someone tortured, it's the fact that someone made a film that is so completely twisted and fucked up that you KNOW there has to be someone out there like that. If anything it's a small inside to how a person like that thinks and works...if anything is that a bit educational?

I like these films because they scare the shit out of me. When I go to see a horror movie, I don't want to see some dude dressed up in a wolf costume. I want to see some really fucked up stuff that actually (or potentially) goes on in this world.

edited to say, what ever happened to entertainment? why get so up tight? it's a movie.

Ok, I guess it all boils down to the fact that you like to have the crap scared out of you and I don't. Fair enough. I don't really feel the need to be scared. I my work I could end up dead any day. I'm not getting shot at or anything, I do construction and I use all kinds of sharp spiny things and such, and I have been pretty seriously injured on the job, so I'm pretty aware of my own mortality. I'm not that uptight, I'm just continually curious, especially about things I can't seem to figure out on my own.

If there is one thing the world needs, it is a repeat of the last thread about this movie.

Same here. Simple human nature, really. Somebody tells you something is bad, dark and evil, and naturally you want to see it MORE. I've read a lot of books (and watched a lot of films) because of this phenomenon.

Some people just like stuff like that, myself included. I'm into all sorts of dark and morbid things; I have been since I was a kid. I read horror magazines and books, I watch horror movies, I play horror games I have horror dreams.

Why don't you like stuff like that? It's just as valid a question. Can you explain why you don't like horror?

Yeah it's very suspicious that you DON'T like torturing and murdering and fantasizing about torturing and murdering.
We all dream about it.
Whats wrong with you varukasalt?!

I'm squeamish. Watching others in pain actually makes me physically uncomfortable. I don't know if I would go as far as to say I was empathetic in some "psychic" sort of way, but I can't handle watching that sort of stuff. I also don't feel the need to be reminded of all the sick twisted ways people can treat each other. There's plenty of that on the news.

There it is. It's as valid to be "wired" as a hetero male or a lover of lemonade as it is to be wired to love watching horror and torture flicks (I myself am repulsed by that stuff and never rent those flicks.)

I guess as long as all you're doing to feed that appetite is rent those flicks, and you're not actually kidnapping and skinning women, well... to each his own.
