The F-Word

Tags: feminism

One of the things that makes feminism so cool is that it frees us gals from the must-compete-for-men mindset. Therefore, I'm quite happy to let you all in on a little secret: I'm not the only blogger in the universe who's out to reframe how y'all see the world.

And we're winning, you know. Except for Rick Santorum, most Americans think that women should hold paying jobs, and even be paid the same as men for doing the same work, that women who wear pants are not asking to be raped, and that men are smart enough to take care of babies. It's just a matter of time before folks get on board with the idea that it's not really anyone else's business if a woman takes the pill, that mothers don't have to approach the perfection of Mary to be good parents, that lesbians neither hate men nor secretly want to have sex in front of them, and that whether or not a woman is hot isn't actually that big a deal.

We're in ur internets infectin ur brainz. Some of us are even getting interview time on ur favorite late-night talk shows. Like Jessica Valenti, who was on the Colbert Report last night promoting her new book, Full Frontal Feminism.

Check it out. Jessica actually flusters Colbert at one point, and you can tell that he's completely on board.

Bitch_PhD digs Jessica.

So basically women shouldn't drink in any place where they may, potentially, be in danger?

no. that is not what I said. please reread my post and hopefully figure out where you drifted into hyperbole

yes, it'd be nice if women could drink to their heart's content in a house full of sexually rabid males. and, by and large, they can. it's a risky endeavor, though, and one that will occasionally end poorly because people fucking suck.

if a fellow is walking down the streets of harlem shouting "i hate niggers", i'd expect a full-scale ass kicking to ensue at the very least and, quite probably, homicide.

Ah yes. Drinking in a public bar is the moral equivalent of inflammatory racism. Well done.

i see no mention of a public bar anywhere in my post, the post i responded to, or the original article. where'd you manufacture that?

and, for that matter, how on earth did you make the leap from getting shit-faced and passing out at a frat party and making racially inflammatory comments both being similarly bad decisions as far as risk-taking behavior is concerned to the two being morally equivalent?

No, girls who wear slutty outfits are. tongue

Obviously, I'm kidding, but it's true that a lot of people seem to think that, especially if she's been *gasp* drinking. Which is the dumbest thing ever, because nobody should ever be blamed for letting their guard down (unless they're a psychic).

I loved that Colbert clip.

i think there needs to be a distinction drawn between "she was asking for it" because she got drunk at a frat party and "she's a fucking idiot" cuz she got drunk at a frat party. i think people *should* be blamed for letting their guard down. utopia, this world ain't...and it's disingenuous to act or even think like it is. your actions have consequences, and it would behoove you to consider the consequences before taking action.

I know it happens, and most girls are smart enough to take precautions. I'm saying that when it does happen, you can't blame the victim for not being cautious enough, because there's no way to determine what exactly constitutes 'enough.'

absolutely there's a ton of grey area in there....i was speaking of the extremes like getting so hammered you pass out at a frat party

Maybe she is, but oddly enough, that came in a reply to me, in which I had never advocated "avoiding dangerous situations" nor had I suggested "telling girls to be aftraid".

So correct it might be, but as a response to anything I was saying, it is quite the non sequitur.

It's like she's responding to someone and something else entirely.

It should'nt matter but it does OK . I'm sick and tired of feminsts raging on about we should'nt have to be afraid or go to a bar or some frat party and always have our guard up or not be afraid ...well guess what sugar britches welcome to the real world grown woman, I have my guard up in strange new environments as well, I can be afraid around a bunch of drunked coked out sports/frat guys looking for "good time" like any woman would be. Men get can get attacked in private as well as in public where as women are more likley to just get attacked just in private. Gangs and groups of unruly blokes on the piss are a scurge on society and have been for generations so whats the shock there.

Your arguments on education of men about not rapping women ...what fucking planet are you liviing on, I dont go a day with out seeing a TV advert or billboard detailing sexual assault or crimes againts women. I think the problem is men's sexuality is often described in the negative it isnt disscussed openly. Certain social norms are there to retard men's sexual expression and identity, I have ways believed men get a raw deal in this and there is no one to ultimately blame but ourselves. We let women decide our sexual idenity a lot of the time, we refuse to talk about it openly to each other as that can be gay or unmanly. We have very little cultural frames of reference for a postive sexual identiy to compare or fall back on. I think men have many sexual problems that need empathy and a kind helping hand when a man expresses such but society wont or cant tackle that problem ..its in the to hard basket ...be a man get over it is the cry and we wonder why men dont seek help or express feelings or emtions of a sexual nature. Women are disgusted by men with a problem as are other men.

Look at women talking about sexuality and there expresion of it ...its celebrated men's is shunned or stunted. A woman has sexual problem she gets a kind word and help , men get a sneer and a label as at least problamatic at worst deviant, no help no kind words no education...nothing especialy if he has done nothing. I got told growing up the whole time by older women that if I ever raped a woman or molested a kid blah blah blah .. it was assumed from up front that i was somehow going to so there for had to be stopped it was all negative and accusing, never education or advice with a kind tone. By the end of it all, the beginnings of puberty I almost fucking wanted to rape the evil bitches that kept screaming at me I was a rapists in waiting , fucking cunts seroiusly it was hell for a few years there and it just wasnt me it was every boy I knew, they were grown women I was fucking 12, I consider my self abused by older women as a child emotionaly and phycologicly you wouldnt believe the shit That was said to me as a boy.

I'm not blaming any victim but really the definition of stupidty is hight risk behavour, You go to some sports stars house or frat party or where ever and you know its going to be a highly sexualy charged environment, lots of booze, drugs etc common sense tells you that if half the women there are there to fuck their favourite sports star or latest crush, common sense tells you there is going to be predatory behavour by some men in attendance .Wake the fuck up, Again it shouldnt matter but in the real world it does.

No one ever says respect men in general no women ever says men deserve respect and dignity just like a women. We are protrayed as demons and women as angels most of the time, I dont agree or like men or groups of men that disrespect a women just for her being one but ......I understand why they do it. You dont have to earn anything from us why should we.

Wow, that's a lot of wrong in one post. Firstly, men's sexuality is not repressed or demonised. Porn is geared towards men and advertising uses images of scantily-dressed women to sell products to men. Meanwhile, women are told that if they dress in a certain way, they are asking to be molested, raped or otherwise objectified. Many are told from a young age that if they come home pregnant, they will be beaten. THAT is repressing a person's sexuality. Not to mention that if a guy sleeps around, he's a stud. A woman does it, she's a slut.

Secondly, telling a child from a young age that rape and abuse are wrong is good parenting, not child abuse. I'm honestly sorry if you feel that you got this more than others, but teaching a kid to respect women and not abuse them is a fucking good idea in my opinion. I was told as a child by my mother, who was frequently abused throughout her life, that if I ever hit a woman, I'd be disowned. Guess what, I don't hit women!

As for men not getting respect? If a man does a good job, he's a hard worker. Earns money for his family? He's a good provider. A woman looks after kids herself and has a full-time job? Well, she'd probably work harder if she didn't have kids. Women have always had it worse than men, they still do. Blaming women's influence in society for rape is just another way of continuing this.

I'm happy somebody else pointed this out. But the problem isn't just her. People like Andrea Dworkin, for example, who have been published far and wide and still have a pretty big audience do as well. It's unfair all feminists get lumped in with people like this, but it happens.

The story has been in the Washington Post and several other places...hey, even some sports blogs (written by a man!) have taken issue with the pole vaulter story. To say that it's just an issue brought up by the "yelling feminists" is way off base. It's not really hysteria to suggest that maybe, just maybe it might be nice to have a real apology.
