"Designer Vaginas Fucked Up" Says Top Medical Journal

Forget the nose job, for her sweet sixteen, she wants a designer vagina. The popularity of elective genitoplasty has been on the rise for a while, and the demand for designer vagina surgery is said to be growing, in part due to "idealized images of genitalia shown in pornography and on private genitoplasty Web sites."

The practice has recently been condemned by the British Medical Journal, who claim that there is "a disturbing lack of data about the phenomenon, there has been negligible assessment about surgical after-effects -- and almost zero reflexion as to whether a labial "problem" exists in the first place."

More and more women are said to be troubled by the shape, size, or proportions of their vulvas, so that elective genitoplasty is apparently a "booming business." Advertisements for cosmetic genitoplasty are common, often including before and after images and life changing narratives. Google produced around 490 000 results when we entered "labial reduction". Forty seven of the first 50 results were advertisements from clinics in the United Kingdom and United States offering cosmetic genital surgery.

It's nice that women are looking at their vaginas, but it's too bad they're not happy with what they see.

Hate to rain on your parade, but I know a number of women who have breasts and nipples that are sensitive enough that stimulating them will induce an orgasm.

I know even more women who had a loss of sensation after having "breast augmentation".

I am not saying that "implants = loss of sensation" but I don't think you can accurately say "labiaplasty=loss of orgasm" either. It may be the case for some, but I doubt it is the case for everybody.

this is about as messed up as people who have their assholes bleached because they are too dark

Thanks for that great bit of information. I could have lived me entire life without knowing that.

Anal bleaching is a myth.

I believe that to which you are referring is a non-consensual removal/circumcision of the most prominent part of the clitoris.

And for those of you on the desensitivity bandwagon the clitoris extends downward around the opening of the vagina and under the same Labia you are considering modifying.

Labiaplasty is a voluntary procedure and thus does not compare to "female circumcision".

They have a specific look that they want and only hire women who have vaginas that reflect that.

I really, really don't think this is true.

Do you really think there are enough girls dying to be in porn that the industry can deny some of them for having less than perfect vaginas? I'm willing to be that how a woman's gennies look is rarely, if ever a consideration in porn that isn't some kind of VAG ONLY fetish video.

While it may not affect "getting hired" it can certainly affect how successful you may be, just like weight, breast size, and hair color can affect success in porn.

it scares me that even genitalia are not immune from attack for noncomformity. and anyway, why on earth would everyone's look exactly the same?

Men deal with this shit every day. Welcome to our world.

Thank GOD somebody said it...

If the premise here is that "all penises look the same", then you really haven't looked at anyones penis but your own (and the fairly homogenous penises in porn). There are major differences in dimension on parts (larger head, smaller head, flatish shaft, round shaft, relative size of scrotum and testicles to the rest, etc...)

I know a number of pornographers. The penises you see are picked for size relative to the man and the women they will be filming (most porn stars are smallish people), the ability to maintain an erection in a room full of people (although with the advent of viagra and similar medications this is less a requirement than it used to be), and a idealized visual shape where the shaft and the head are of relatively similar dimension.

Ok, I'm going to chime in here, there ARE real physical reasons to have this done. If you have a meat sail down there it can get caught on the in-stroke and tear which is incredibly painful and can expose a woman to disease and infection. It also can bunch up and get in the way of the clit getting any action. If a woman wants to change something about herself, why is it anyone's business? How are other body mods any different from this? Lets loosen up on the judgment eh?

I agree.

I know several ladies who have had this done for theraputic and aesthetic reasons. Ever heard of 'my body, my choice'?

Oyyyyy veeeyyyy.

WTF? Will the human race all turn out to be perfect, plastic Barbie dolls? It'll be like a perma-beauty pageant, everywhere you look.
I'm creeping myself out.

There's nothing perfect, or for that matter, particularly beautiful about Barbies. They don't even HAVE vaginae.

I've read a few articles discussing this and even saw something on that show (maybe it's on E! - that's what my neighbour usually has on) about rich people getting plastic surgery - the girl was unhappy with her labia being "too big" or hanging too low or something. The varying shapes of vaginae are part of their allure. Unless there's a health-related issue or discomfort that a change in attire or something nonsurgical could alleviate, I think it's a horrible travesty to strip the cooter of its beauty.

I guess to each her own. Aside from my afore-mentioned reasons of comfort and health, I suppose some women may prefer a generic-looking, unattractive coochie. confused

HAHA Sg'ers are all like "women have the right to an abortion but not a pretty pussy." There are tons of plastic surgeons out there and naturally they need to expand their business. Most women do not need this to look beautiful but everyone has seen a monster mud flap or two... Most vay jay are nice and pretty but a few aren't so much. Everyone has their own standard of beauty and if they want to chase after that then they should have the right. There are risks like anything else good in life. So go on girl and trim that gobbler neck.

Funny, I didn't read that in the thread. Some people thought it was frivolous and unnecessary, and others thought it was up to the vagina haver to decide if it got snipped and sewed or not, and some thought that the procedure should be subject to more scrutiny and research before being widely used.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

And damn, you've got a lot of euphemisms for vulva.
