Sorry to Tell You, Boys...

...but not only is smoking apparently less carcinogenic than blowjobs*, it's also more pleasurable.

After controlling for other risk factors for throat cancer, such as drinking and smoking, the analysis revealed that people who had prior infection with HPV were 32 times as likely to have this cancer as those with no evidence of ever having the virus. And those who tested positive for a particularly aggressive strain of the virus, called HPV-16, were 58 times more likely to have throat cancer.

By comparison, either smoking or drinking increases the risk of such cancer by about threefold.

From here on out, no pole smoking--cigarettes only, thanks.

Bitch_PhD isn't gonna lie--Sherman's MCDs taste better than spunk.

Way to miss the point, champ.

Ok, so what's the point?

Terribly written, tabloid-quality reporting from New Scientist?

So the whole HPV being spread through oral sex, and then causing cancer thing is false?

Yeah, that's exactly what I said. You're a thrilling conversationalist.

Cool. So you're saying that it isn't false. That's good. As long as we're clear about that.

Wow. Head meet brick wall.

I still can't figure out how smoking ties into the whole thing (or why)

Why in the world would you be so gleeful about smoking cigarettes being better for you than giving blowjobs??

NOt swallowing is not enough as the teeeny tiny warts that cause the problem are on the PEENY and anyway, we all know you guys leak.... wink

WHat is so tough is that this seems to be an STD that people just do not know they have and you cannot always see it

But what i really wished is that cigarette smoking somehow burnt away the HPV risk. Now THAT would be HOT news. surreal

Wavion's right; it's technically incorrect to say that it's the oral sex per se which causes throat cancer when in fact it appears to be the HPV which does.

indeed. not only this, but it appears that Bitch isn't even her real name.

whatever
I don't believe that for a second.

Contrary to popular opinion, higher education doesn't, in fact, remove one's sense of humor.

Dunno what your problem is, though. Candianism?

Bah, Canadians are well known for their sense of humor. You're just getting your facts wrong left and right.

HAHA!
good comeback ... "well you're from canada"? Wow... I'm hurt.

Look at this:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=pubmed&list_uids=10706945&cmd=Retrieve&indexed=google
See now this article shows that swallowing ejaculate protects against preeclampsia toxemia (that's a really high blood pressure during pregancy that can kill ya folks) so actually oral sex could save a life, but only if you swallow.

Talk about a seminal paper...
(That's a double entendre... but you may have to be Canadian and speak French to know what that is)

Now the thing is, that's funny AND scientifically accurate.

Try it sometime kiddo.... you'll like it

bye bye now

Are you really, seriously, linking a study showing that swallowing semen is good for you in a thread about how oral sex can spread a virus linked to cancer? Touting swallowing semen in a thread about STD's...priceless.

Less than 200,000 people get preeclampsia a year.

MILLIONS of people contract HPV. Men and women. Not just a very small percentage of pregant women.

are you really, seriously, flaming a guy for injecting some barely relevant, anecdotal data in response to a thread promoting the thesis that smoking is, "apparently less carcinogenic than blowjobs" ?

Okay, well, why don't you look up some info on how many sexually active people are infected with HPV of some strain or another (hint: it's a lot) and then on the number of different ways one can tell before giving a blowjob whether a guy has one of the cancer-causing strains pf HPV, or whether he has been infected with any of the strains at all (hint: there are precious few)?

wow. everything about this article sucks. no pun intended. but yes, everything gives you cancer. goddamn. frown

oh, and as an addition....

last time i went to the gyno, i asked him about HPV testing since it's been all over the news, etc. etc.

he said that they ONLY test for HPV if the pap smear comes back abnormal, which probably explains why it runs so rampant if testing is inconsistent and there are a bajillion strains which exist.... flying under the radar, so to speak....

Yeah. Smoking isn't as bad as those "such cancers." I don't think blowjobs have any ill effects on one's lungs. And they certainly don't cause emphesema.

I can't tell where the sarcasm begins and ends.

I bet if you inhaled semen, it would be really bad for your lungs.

This article is a bit too alarmist, and NewScientist do not give the whole study's data away.

Check out the real article published by the NewEngland journal of medicine.
Yes people with HPV have HPV-16 have loads more chances of having throat cancer than smokers, but if you average it on the whole population, the risk ratio is equal for people smoking and for people having oral sex.

And it's oral sex that increases the risk of oropharyngeal squamous-cell carcinoma, not just BlowJob.

I'm all for your articles madame Bitch, but please get your facts straight.
