Sorry Vegetarians, No More Snickers (or Twix, or Mars, or Milky Way) Bars For You

What's better than a Snickers bar when you need some satisfaction? How about a Snickers bar made with the inner-mucosa (fourth stomach) of slaughtered, milk-fed, new-born cow calves! Yum, yum! What's that? You're a vegetarian and you avoid animal rennet? Well, then you'll also want to avoid all chocolate and ice cream treats from Masterfoods. Not familiar with Masterfoods? Here's a list of the products they'll be making with slaughtered baby cow bellies:

Rennet will now be found in Snickers, M&M, Twix, Milky Way, Bounty, Mars, Dove Chocolate and Malteasers products, as well as the ice cream versions of all Masterfoods' bars.

Awesome! Now not only is your Snickers bar peanutty, nougatty, and chocolaty, it's rennety!

Paul Goalby, corporate affairs manager for Masterfoods, demonstrated his clear understanding of and respect for the vegetarian lifestyle with this explanation:

"If the customer is an extremely strict vegetarian, then we are sorry the products are no longer suitable, but a less strict vegetarian should enjoy our chocolate."

Apparently, "less strict" vegetarians find the inner-mucosa of slaughtered, milk-fed, new-born cow calves delectable, like veal and fois gras. Bravo, Masterfoods, for taking an enormous step backwards. Alternatives to animal rennet are available, but you already know that—you used to use them.

You think? I mean, just check out 99% of the comments on this thread. You give people way too much credit--first for knowing what's in their food, second for caring, and third for taking action.

ding! winner.

as much as i laugh along with my friends when they make jokes about me not eating meat or dairy, deep down, i think you people are all fucking retards. i know i'm casting stones where i probably shouldn't, but it doesn't change how i feel. the willful mass-ignorance of something important to the survival of our species makes me want to choke a bitch, plain and simple.

Um, what on earth are you talking about? The only way I can read this is you implying that not eating animal products is crucial to the survival of the human race, which would seem manifestly untrue.

And yes, you are casting stones where you shouldn't.

He's talking about food, genius. The willful mass-ignorance of what you put in your mouth. (In this case that would be your foot.)

Maybe if he hadn't said anything about his friends teasing him for not eating meat or dairy, I could see that.

This is really annoying. I've become a semi-vegetarian (not because of ethical reasons, just because meat has started to make me feel sick) and I don't know what to do now I know they're pouring cow's stomach lining into cheese and candy bars.

On the one hand, I could try and pretend I don't know what's in them so I can keep enjoying the creamy goodness. But on the other hand, its just putrid and disgusting.

There are plenty of non-animal types of rennet out there, why don't they just use them? Do the manufacturers get some perverse thrill from seeing people obliviously eat disgusting things?

as far as I know (not far) They dont have to kill the cows to get the rennet, I thought it was something that could be extracted from milking, or cultivated in jars or something.

Still Creepy, and it is also found in many pizzas, and in some powdered doughnuts.

powdered doughnuts?!
what? surreal

I got a few things to say...
1st. For those who think Vegetarians will inherit the earth, it was those who went from vegetarian to omnivours that did before. That's why we have sharp teeth in the front now. So, before you try to call me inferior because I follow what my ancient ancestors found that was better, think before you open your fucking mouth to me.
2nd. For those who think he is an Ass for saying, only strict vegetarians, he is right. Cause it is used in MANY processes, like cheese and yogart and milk. So, actually, it is the VEGANS that wouldn't like it. which is a "strict" vegetarian. So, if you even give a fuck about this article, that means you eat said products, which could have used this further back in the process. This things aren't made all in one place.
3rd. For those who are pissed that others don't care what is in their food, look at everything. Unless you grow your food yourself, you have no idea what you are eating. Veggies/Fruits are pumped with many MANY chemicals, which I'm sure some have an animal product in there somehow. So, unless you have a garden in your backyard, and that is all you eat, get off my back for enjoying a delicious fucking snickers.
4th. As far as alternatives, yes, there is a few. Some made from Mold/Funguses, which can end up with animal products in them. Some can be made from veggies, but there is no commercial distributer in the WORLD for this, which a company of such size would need. And then there is Genetics, which all those bleeding hearts out there are against, cause yes it does require a sample.
5th. In the end, this was a stupid decision. Yes it can affect the taste because it affects the process of how it is made. When it comes to food, which I am going to school for, even the smallest thing can effect the taste. Or it could be the cost, which, animal rennet is used in cheaper foods so I presume it is cheaper, but because of the switch, you lose a HUGE market. Not only do you have the VEGANS, uneducated folks who think you have wronged them, and just don't know what they eat eslewer, and the that you piss off, but there are many religions, such as Jews, Muslims, and Hindu's that will not be too happy. So if you lose the market, you lose money anyways. Not a smooth move.

So, I'm sure someone will be pissed, but Oh, well. I LOVED my M&M's that I ate earlier. ARRR!!!

Get off your high horse man. You mean to tell me that you know just about everything about the food products that you put into your mouth? BULLSHIT... Unless you grow and prepare all of your own food, you are leaving that up to someone else, trusting someone else to tell you the truth about the processes behind your food production.

How is your food any more safe simply because you don't eat meat or dairy?
