Sister Spit's Ramblin' Road Show Rides Again

I know it's easy to think of us editors as all-knowing infallible beings, but sadly even we can sometimes fall behind the times. I know this because clashing schedules and the simple matter of not knowing soon enough forced me to miss Sister Spit: The Next Generation's San Diego appearance, and now I want to kick myself. I can't, in good conscience, allow the same thing to happen to you.

Now for some background info: Sister Spit was founded in 1997 by Sini Anderson and Michelle Tea, as a notoriously loud and raucous travelling showcase meant to feature up-and-coming queer female writers. Their Ramblin' Roadshow toured in '97 and '98, then once more in 2001, and has since laid fairly still.

Until now, that is. After editing the new anthology Baby Remember My Name, Tea (along with fellow OG veterans Ali Liebegott and Eileen Myles) picked five of the book's fresh young contributors to take on the road with them for a slam-poetic, performance-centric, multi-generational punk rock feminist not-at-all-antiques roadshow that should likely prove a good time all around.

A few dates have already passed -- as I said, no one ever tells me anything anymore -- so it's pretty midwest-and-eastern-seaboard heavy at this point. The upside is that performances at colleges and bookstores tends to mean free. (Though, did you know, donations are tax deductible? It's true! Hint, hint.) Here's where you can catch up with them:

April 19: Nashville, TN (Vanderbilt University)
April 20: Lexington, KY (University of Kentucky)
April 21: Chicago, IL (Women and Children First Bookstore)
April 22: Wooster, OH (College of Wooster)
April 23: Bryn Mawr, PA (Bryn Mawr College)
April 24: Bronxville, NY (Sarah Lawrence College)
April 25: Waltham, MA (Brandeis University)
April 26: Boston, MA (Tufts University)
April 27: Providence, RI (Brown University)
April 28: Geneva, NY (Hobart and William Smith Colleges)
April 29: Annandale, NY (Bard College)
April 30: Brooklyn, NY (Cattyshack)

May 1: Northampton, MA (Smith College)
May 2: Newark, DE (University of Delaware)
May 3: Williamsburg, VA (College of William and Mary)
May 4: Asheville, NC (University of North Carolina)
May 5: Gainesville, FL (Universal Training Ctr/Wild Iris Books)

I highly recommend checking out their website for some indication of the general aesthetic (especially things we love, which is clickably delicious all on its own). Also, if you're interested, then stay tuned for this weekend, when I'll be highlighting a couple of my favorite books from members of the tour. Until then, I'll just be here still knowing that I missed it. Pity party, table for one, indeed.

I missed Sister Spit in SF (I had to work) and wanted to cry. Thanks for spreading the word on such an awesome phenomena, though. Michelle Tea is pretty much my literary guardian angel.

Yeah, my best friend since middle school flew in to Riverside County last week from Chicago to see her brother who's in the hospital with cancer, and Friday (S.S. performance night) was the only night she was available to go out with friends but she couldn't drive all the way down here on account of staying close to family. So the decision was obvious, it was just an unfortunate situation.

Seriously though, Michelle Tea is brilliant. Have you read her new one yet?

Rose of No Man's Land? Yes. I spent 6 hours on a Saturday holed up in my room with my cellphone turned off. Fabulous.
