Men May Soon be Completely Obsolete

Scientists are researching methods of producing sperm cells from bone marrow. It's been done already with marrow extracted from male subjects, but now the question's been raised about whether it should be tried with females' marrow.

"Theoretically is it possible," Professor Nayernia said. "The problem is whether the sperm cells are functional or not. I don't think there is an ethical barrier, so long as it's safe. We are in the process of applying for ethical approval. We are preparing now to apply to use the existing bone marrow stem cell bank here in Newcastle. We need permission from the patient who supplied the bone marrow, the ethics committee and the hospital itself."

Aside from providing another alternative for otherwise infertile couples, the article points out that this could also be a breakthrough for lesbian couples. Two women could produce a true biological daughter together, eliminating the obstacles faced by having a child who is only biologically tied to one partner. The other partner typically goes through an adoption process, which can be frustrating and difficult.

Creating sperm from women would mean they would only be able to produce daughters because the Y chromosome of male sperm would still be needed to produce sons. The latest research brings the prospect of female-only conception a step closer.

It's only a matter of time, however, before the conservatives start crying about how this procedure would only make it easier for lesbians to breed more lesbians. They seem to love claiming that the children of gay couples will somehow always turn out to be gay.

In any case, who's gonna help me start my lady army?

Genius.

When I got a vasectomy, people always asked me what I'd do if I changed my mind.
I'd say "Don't worry -- by the time that ever comes close to happening, we'll all be able to clone ourselves from bone marrow." I think this is actually one step better.

Anyway, between this and the feeldoe, I'm proudly tendering my resignation from usefulness, and accepting my place as a good-natured anachronism.
Maybe I can finally get some of this artwork done.

I for one am happy about this. Finally we can be released from the bondage of being slaves to the female biological clock!

YAY!!!! Another way to overpopulate the planet. Sweet!

The base population of the current human race at one time faced a genetic bottleneck which reduced us to less than 56,000 people. Because of this, and the fact that the male human only carries one copy of the Y chromosome, while the female carries two copies of the X, the Y chromosome in less than 30,000 generations from now will eventually accrue more genetic damage than is repairable and will cease to exist.
The female X chromosome, because it travels in pairs in a female, has redundancy to correct missing or damaged pieces in either chromosome.

The human male is literally going extinct in about 100,000 years from now. If anybody cares, they better think of a new way for females to reproduce.

Small rodents have existed for millions and millions of years, and their reproductive system and the genetics it implies are identical to ours (We have much bigger penises, however). If this thesis were to be correct, those small mammals would have faced the exact same problem that you claim human males will, and there would be, say, no male rats, or no male possums, hell, no male elephants. Even birds operate in a similar genetic way, and science now has a direct tie between chickens and dinosaurs. But there are certainly male birds.

Life has always seemed to find a way to overcome this genetic hurdle. What that entails, we don't know, and won't know until it happens, but it's inconceivable that the male of our species, or ANY species, will be wiped out, especially since the chimpanzee male and gorilla male still exist, and they as species have been around at least a good hundred thousand years longer than us and share almost exactly our genetic makeup.

Life finds a way.

The only species currently around are the ones that are not extinct. That does not mean they found a way around a small genetic bottleneck, it may mean they did not experience it.

Also, yes I said we would find a way. In fact that is the entire point of the article from what I can tell.

Am I the only one here who is disturbed by this. I Think it is disgusting and probably will prove to be false, as in bone marrow cells wont take or as some have you have pointed out , Life finds away...ya life finds away to fuck you up good. We start doing things like this in 1000 years well have two heads 13 fingers 3 toes and no sex organs or some shit. I'm all for stem cell research IVF treatment for infertile people but to start messing with left of center reproduction methods we are going to fuck ourselves up.
