Target Aims at Libertine

Everyone's at it lately; commissioning big name designers to run lines in mainstream stores. It can be a great thing, if the designers get it right and don't just opt for a mild taste of what is usually a delight on the senses. I've seen some great lines work out in fashion stores like H&M, but Target? It remains to be seen. Their Go line has left something to be desired. It seems to only be a watered down, brightly coloured collection of what is "fashionable" yet ultimately safe. I'd like to see something a bit more adventurous.

So when I read the news that Libertine designers Cindy Greene and Johnson Hartig were busy creating the next line my mouth began to water. Now, let's hope they don't just opt for palatable, smart casual designs with some "punk" screen prints. I want to see those beautiful customised and raw vintage designs in all their glory. Of course, they won't be the one-off special pieces they usually produce, but I'll take what I can get.

The collection will be Launched in mid July and will be on sale for just two months.

I doubt they will pull it off. Or, more accurately, I doubt Target will LET them pull it off. Remember, that the majority of the Target audience (pun certainly intended) is just a half tick up from WalMart.

I hope I am proven wrong. But, when the bulk of consumers are unable to go to IKEA and find matching furniture, then I doubt they would buy anything even remotely creative.
(but what do I know, I care so little that I shop at Old Navy)
