What's Zo Wearing? March 4, 2007

Secret Photoshop Agent and resident Fashion Icon Zoetica often has the staff at SGHQ asking, "What's Zo Wearing?" Her unique and eccentric style is a rallying call to those who suffer from mainstream malaise. Each week, she tells us how she's combined ordinary items to create her extraordinary look. Undaunted by unusual combinations, "What's Zo Wearing" is SG's answer to middle-of-the-road makeover shows.

Zo says:A tale in two parts.

Part, the First: Surgical masks.

SGHQ was infected with some sort of death plague most of this week, and measures had to be taken. With two dance performances i have coming up next week, i had to protect my health at all costs, from downing a minimum of two EmergenC packets daily, to wearing a surgical mask. It's rare to see anyone in the States wearing one at work, or in public at all, for that matter. It's simply not common practice here, whereas many people in Japan wear them when their allergies flare up, when they have colds to protect fellow public transit commuters, etc. It isn't only considerate and wise, but makes one look like a super-villain. I'd love to incorporate more lightweight facial appliances into my every day wardrobe, really.

Part, the second: Let me tell you about my jacket.

The first time i came across Mido was in early 2004, at a tent of a street vendor in Camden. The coat was black, ankle-length, flared toward the bottom and had a hood that zipped up over my nose into a ninja mask with two long spook-bunny ears draping from the back of it. It was made made for jumping on rooftops and lurking in shadows, and I spent the last of my trip money of the damned thing. Then and there i vowed to find this Mido brand on eBay and never spend that much again. It was not so easy. In fact, it took ages to find a vendor in America, and even they're based in San Francisco, where now i make occasional Mido-procuring pilgrimages. That is where i acquired the jacket you see in this week's edition of WZW. I intend to collect all things Mido...one day.

Jacket: Mido
Top with princess sleeves + pocket watch print: Smashing Grandpa
Multi-tiered skirt: fromt Buffalo Exchange
Tights: Hot Topic
Slouchy socks: Hot topic
Ruffle belt: Hot Topic [3 in a row. going to hell]
Purse: Forever 21
Platform sneakers: Demonia

Zoetica Ebb is a painter, SG style technician, make up artist, alt. model, photgrapher & occasional cosmonomad. Born in Moscow, Russia, she was raised by a troup of gypsy scientists from space, who coldly sold her to an American technological research facility in 1992. After a daring escape, she graduated from the LA County High School for the Arts, retreated into the rumored underground atelier where she studied with the much-revered fashion guru Madame Von Kuntzertag, followed by a brief stint at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She's traveled the world, gathering fashion expertise and is thrice certified as official Finesse Monitor to the Khan throne. She hates it when humans tell her to smile. Surgical masks are kind of hot in a bizzare way, however you may be right about going to hell for the Hot Topic purchases smile

The world would be a much nicer place if we all donned masks to limit the spread of germs...
Or if we all dressed this nice.

I think it's a bit strange that I've checked this column, to see a girl in clothes, more regularly than I look at the nude tattooed chicks I joined for.

I'm calling my therapist! blush

Btw - I dig your style, but surgical masks remind me of Michael Jackson.

In San Francisco you see the masks quite a bit on the bus and the BART.

Tasty! As always!

I'm not sure that the mask is much of a contribution to a photoset, but if it saved you from the plague, then by all means...

+1 to Lowroller... Zo fully-dressed is something I never miss.

Damn you Camden Town! My wife and I have a bunch of shops we love in Camden whose stuff we can't find anywhere else. I don't know if I remember Mido, but Kunpado was our big love that we can't find online or anywhere else. I'd love to go back to stock up, but with the pound-dollar exchange where it is, buying anything in Europe right now is a horrifying thought. frown

I love Mido! They are still sold in Camden too.

P.S The surgical masks in Japan were one of things I found to be a big indicator of the respect people have (and maybe even a little fear). Either way, I think they're grand.

today I am wearing a wonderful blue/grey plad oversize vintage abercrombie and fitch button down carpenter shirt that looks like a flannel... levis 501s button fly denim wash, black adidas ankle socks and blue customized converse one stars with gum soles that I custom made on their website. When i leave the house, I am going to pull over a heather grey cable knit sweater that I never washed, some black garnder gloves and my raybans. I feel cute.
