James Suicide Makes an Appearance on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric

Wednesday night the CBS Evening News aired a segment about the insanely popular documentary and book The Secret. Among the people interviewed about the documentary (including one of the experts featured in the documentary itself, Michael Beckwith) was our very own James Suicide, a.k.a. Samantha Humphreys.

The documentary and book outline the universal "law of attraction," a tool used by great minds throughout history to gain financial and personal success by focusing on the positive feelings that come along with their goal. For more information about The Secret and the law of attraction, you can visit the official site for the film.

James, an avid practitioner of all things positive, was asked to share her story about how the secret has worked in her life. The segment also features SG member halsparks, one of James's favorite funny-men.

You can view the video online here.

What do you have to lose by giving it a try? At worst you have (gasp) a positive outlook while things aren't going your way - and it give you a chance to stop blaming other people, and the universe in general, when your life isn't what you want it to be.
Sometimes an idea so obvious only makes sense when you think about the number of times it has actually worked and you have been too busy to notice. The funny thing about 'The Secret' is that it's not: it's something you probably already know but haven't taken the time to think about. It just takes a few people, whatever you think their motive might be, to put it into writing and make it accessible, so that you start paying attention to the coincidences that keep manifesting in your life and make the most of them (if you choose to consider it further).

My partner and I have been 'swallowing' it for quite a while, and we've never been happier.

I just realized I heard an audio version of this report on the radio yesterday and heard James speaking. Even though I knew her real name, I didn't make the connection until now... blush
If nothing else, it can help banish negative thinking from your life, and that can't be bad.

Um, the money they charge you for the books/DVD/T-shirt?

No one is saying that "think positive" is bad advice, just that it's nothing new, it's not a secret, and that other people are getting rich off of it.

There are times where, especially on a societal and cultural level, where other people and "the universe in general" are very much to blame for the circumstances people find themselves in.

perceptions impact upon the world we live in. Depending on what are perceptions are of our environment - determines our environment. These measurements are not a "fact" of the universe, they are just something we imposed on the universe so we could try to understand it. Apply this concept of imposing a positive perception on the world, and the world will change to reflect it.

Quick, someone airlift a shit-ton of these DVD's to refugee camps in the Sudan, so they can start imposing a positive perception on the world and thus determine their environment!

whatever

See...Instead of wasting my life and yours just then by being an assface that could have been appeal for whatever you actually think will help refugees in Sudan...In the words of Tom Vu, "Way to go, Loser!"

What if we think mocking new age mumbo-jumbo does make the world a better place?

I completely agree. And I see no need to purchase any of The Secret products to follow this simple and straightforward concept.

Yeah. I'm quite a skeptic. All this "think positive and positive things happen to you... you create your own universe with the power of your thoughts" crap is really hard for me to swallow.

You're not visualizing yourself swallowing it hard enough.

i think the idea of JS out there talking about positivity is a good thing for the world and especially for the SuicideGirls site. i hope things dont go off the rails when people find out she uses the last name Suicide as an alias because its not a positive thing in most cultures. i dont have much interest in this dvd or book beyond James' involvement and peeping what it does for the site but i understand why people are into it

I was at the gym the other day when this aired and I happened to look at the TV right when James and Hal were on and I was like, wait a second... But the TV was on mute, so all I could discern was the undertitle which changed from "so-and-so believes in The Secret" and "so-and-so doesn't believe" and I wondered, "What fucking secret?" Now I know.

We live in truly postmodern times, and by postmodern, I mean that we were probably modern once, but certainly aren't anymore. This is straight up shamanistic voodoo ritual bullshit.

Or you could look it up online for free... (t-shirt? that's just silly).
That it's NOT a secret is exactly the point I made in my comment.

As for the universe being to blame, in some cases it is, but so often people shrug responsibility for the things they can control because it's easier than dealing with it. Which is also why the book is 'marketed' towards people living in a capital driven culture. Like yoga (and not the designer kind), meditation or whatever other pursuit you can cite as an example, what the book and its promoters suggest is a philosophy that costs nothing to try (other than your time). They aren't selling a line of equipment, accessories, etc. (although if someone can hunt something down and post a link I'll eat my words), just an embarassingly cheesy video and a book which is less cheesy because it lacks the graphics and montages, but does have some very pertinent things to say. Suggestions.

I'm certainly not here to argue with anyone, nor am I telling people to rush out and buy anything. Just do some research, or not, talk to people who know something about it, or not. If it does work for you, good. If it doesn't, that's fine too.

At any rate, and rightly so, you can't force people to think in a particular way. It's not a philosophy that should be pushed onto people.

Which is more important....mocking something you haven't experienced and/or don't understand by being ironically cynical in a pseudo-intellectual way
OR
stopping not only the real suffering (e.g. hunger or AIDS) of other people and by doing so alleviating the suffering in your own mind?

If you chose the former, I'd say your priorites are seriously fucked up.

In my experience, the choice between positive and negative thought is the choice between the embracing of life or death.
