I've been looking forward to the film adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel 300 for a long time. I've probably watched the trailer for 300 about 300 times, so when Warner Brothers asked if we'd be interested in hosting an exclusive, behind-the-scenes video journal from the movie, I didn't have to give it much thought.

The film combines live action with virtual backgrounds—similar to Miller's Sin City, although the screens were green for Sin City and blue for 300. The epic graphic novel (and its movie-magic adaptation) tells the story of the Battle of Thermopylae, in which King Leonidas (played by a very ripped Gerard Butler) leads 300 Spartans in a fight to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army.

Gerard Butler hosts this behind-the-scenes video. He calls the movie a "hyper-real, beautiful, emotional world," and says that "the intensity is almost unbearable."

"It's not a documentary," says Gerard, waxing poetic. "It's a kick ass story filled with passion, politics, brutality."

A page of other 300 video journals can be found here.

So here's the hope:

Because the Battle of Thermopylae is such a fantastic story as it is, and Frank Miller's Sin City was so awesome mostly because it was so visually amazing (read: a fantastic panel-by-panel adaptation of the comics) I'm just hoping that the awesomeness of the story isn't just overshadowed by the visual style and special effects.

(Don't shoot me: I'm just saying a similar story directed by Spielberg or Scorcese would be cool, so I'm hoping the story element carries itself the way that the graphics obviously will).

I have a couple of issues with the novel/movie - namely that Leonidas was around 60 when he led the Spartans at Thermopylae, and that they did not fight in just loin cloths and capes - but other than that...I'm very excited to see the movie. I think Frank Miller captured the ferocity of the Spartans very well.

God I soo sooo soo cannot wait for this to hit the screen. I'm gonna majorly geek out and take the day off and go see it twice. Sin City was so faithfull to the books I know 300 will too and I am soo allllllll over it. If you dont have the TPB of Frank Millers Stuff go ebay yourself some or hit amazon.com for it. well worth it.

6000 hoplites and 300 spartans against 130,000 persians. Heroditas said it was a million persians but historians doubt they could have fielded more than 130k ish and there were reports from persian historians who put the number around 130ish, it was the greeks who reported it near 1 million. Leonidas needed to buy time to let the Greek armies assemble, he knew he was going to Hell's Gate to die, above and beyond normal military battle. All the spartans he chose to take with him for his final stand he chose because they were vertans who already had sons to carry on the family name after they were gone. The spartans were just about the only full time soldiers in either army. Most ancient armies at the time would have their city-states call up a draft or order X number of soldiers for their army and pull them out of the general population from other trades, teach them how to march, slap on some armor, and send them off to war and trust their survival instinct to push them forward. Spartans were their own caste, raised from birth to be soldiers. They trained, cooked, and spent all their time together working as a team. As children they were basically mentally tortured to teach them how to push through pain besides their aggresive fighting training for grapplin etc they would learn as soon as they could walk. Besides the 300 spartans there were the 6000 hoplites that marched with them, but they were just the troops drawn up from the general population etc just like the persian armies, but with that they marched on to defend hell's gates. Just 60 feet wide it was very defendable. When Xerxe's army arrived they knew it was a well defended position and they would pay a heavy ratio to root out the 6k soldiers behind the little fortifications they had so they basically parked themselves down waiting for the spartans and hoplites to just retreat and avoid certain death any heavy assault would yeild....and the next day passed and they were still there... and the next as well. 3 days with the 2 armies just staring at each other, Xerxe's certain they didnt mean to stay any longer and face certain death, but stay they did. On the 4th day Xerxe's sent his armies against Leonidas and was driven back... a 5th day.... on the 6th Xerxe's had had enough at being stunted by a few thousand soldiers and sent in his Immortals. His elite professional soldiers... and again they were driven back unable to defeat Leonidas. That night one of the men from the greek army betrayed Leonidas and told Xerxes of the hidden passes through the mountains (which they might have found on their own as well, after all they had been holed up there for nearly a week already) but the greek army was warned the persians had found the pass. At risk of being outflanked the hoplites knew what slim chance they had and the miracle of surviving this long had worn out and they fled and only the survivors of the original 300 spartans stayed to face the horde of the persian army. During the final day of battle, outflanked and under a wall of persian arrows Leonidas had gotten separated from the main bulk of the spartans and was killed. Xerxe's offered to let the remaining spartans surrender and they could go free if they let him have Leonida's body. They reply was simple 'spartans return from war with their sheilds or on their shields' and they cleared a path through the persian army back to Leonida's body and fought their final stand defending their fallen king, dying eventually from the overwhelming wave of arrows from the Persian's archers. The persians were demoralized by the spartans thwarting their army with a mere 6000 soldiers and all the greek armies, and almost anyone else who's heard their story in the past 2500years, was inspired and fought for the next few years I think to push back Xerxes, but eventually his invasion of Greece was defeated.
