"Peace will come to the world when the people have enough to eat."

Inspiring words from the man who made every young, cheap person able to live on no more than 39-cents per day. Momofuku Ando, creator of instant noodles, and chairman of Nissin Food Products Co., passed away early this evening due to heart failure at the age of 96.

Inspired during World War II by a long, hungry line of people in Taiwan waiting to buy fresh Ramen noodles from a food stall, Ando introduced the world's first instant noodle product, Chicken Ramen, in 1958. He followed that in 1971 by unveiling the Cup Noodle (instant noodles in a styrofoam cup).

Despite his unrelenting dedication to his work, he handed over Nissin to his first-born son in 1981. In honor of his accomplishments, he established the Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum in Ikeda to be watched over by his second-born.

Always the avid inventor, his most recent accomplishment was Space Ram noodles, a vacuum packed instant noodle that he created for Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi to eat during the July 2005 US Discovery space mission.

"I'm happy I've realized my dream that noodles can go into space."

I wonder how many people will be unaware of this man's priceless contribution to our modern society when they hear this on the news.

Wow.. That makes me even more sad that ramen noodles make me gag. I've eaten them so much over the years that every part of my body rejects them now, which sucks because I'm still poor as hell!

If it hadn't been for ramen, I probably would've died during the summer of 2003.

I think infinitelykaty and I will have some Ramen noodles for lunch tomorrow.

as much of those things as I've eaten in my life, I still like them. I usually leave out most of the seasoning packet though and just use soy or terryaki sauce.

...NO SUCH POSTER COULD HAVE EXISTED SIR! Had there been, I, and many others, would have placed candles beside it, and worshipped it, DAILY!

Summer of 2000 for me. I had to lick the noodle brick and sprinkle the beef-salt on, and wash it down with rainwater. Ah, memories. Thanks, Mr. Ando.

How many of you just ate the bricks raw when you were kids?
I still do from time to time, just to shake things up! shocked

Mmm... Ramen. I just wish that my mother would stop shipping it 3,000 miles to me and then griping about the shipping costs; and asking me to pay them. Seriously, wouldn't a check for two dollars be simpler?

This would be in instance where the shipping costs would outway the cost of the object being shipped.... confused

A true revolutionary. And, IMO, Cup Noodles are so much better than regular ramen.

*holds up a cup in his honor*

Happy Trails, Mr. Ando.

One of my top five favorite meals since as far back as I can remember.

I like to boil it, drain all the water, mix the flavoring in, and melt a slice of Kraft Singles cheese-food on top. If I'm feeling especially saucy, I might mince some deli ham and let it cook in the heat of the noodles. Everyone says I'm a freak, but whatever. I do what I want! It's what ramen is meant for.

Godspeed, Ando-Senpai.

My two food groups during college; Ramen and pancakes. I owe my life and maybe what little sanity I possess to Momofuku Ando. RIP.
