A man by the name of Rick James (may he rest in peace) once said on the Dave Chapelle Show, "Cocaine is a hell of a drug!" But then again, he said a number of ridiculous things during the duration of his life because 95-percent of the time he was fucked up on coke. But, then again, so was everyone else in the 80s.

Speaking of which, today's generation seems to be extremely influenced by the 80s. With our ever-so-fashion-oriented scenesters, and with all the new wave-retro-electronica music out nowadays, it's no secret that romanticizing 80s excess is cool again. However, depending on your personal habits, a not-so-good 80s influence that seems to be "blowing" up again is the drug cocaine—better known as coke, blow, white girl, snow, white-white or yay.

The President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, apparently has big plans for cocaine in his country as well. Plans which involve major expansion in regards to the legal production of coca (the main ingredient being, of course, cocaine) in Bolivia by more than 60-percent. Morales says he wants to fight against drug trafficking. Sure you do, buddy. Keep in mind Bolivia is the world's third largest producer of cocaine.

In wee little Scotland, the number of cocaine users has doubled in the past few years, rising from a mere 600 users in 2002 to over 1,200 in 2006. And this consensus is only counting the Scots that actually admitted to using cocaine. This still doesn't count all the closeted coke heads. Needless to say, Parliament is more than peeved about the number of Scots who'll be ringing in the new year with a Ziplock full of nose confetti. Parliament wants to end the winter-wonderland bender, get Scotland off of the powder and work on an assertive solution to the growing drug problem. As if Train Spotting didn't clue them in enough. Good luck, Scotland. I salute you!

In other cocaine news, WebMD says that cocaine is, quote, "The most abused major stimulant in America today." Doesn't sound like news to me. It seems that these days, everyone is dusting their noses. But the habit is pricey. Because you can't just have a bump of coke. You have to have a bump of coke and a joint. Or a hot rail and a white russian. It all ends the same way—with your life in shambles and your rent money down the shitter. So have fun all you lovers of the nose-nonsense...just don't come to my house and pawn my TV so you can become another statistic.

Twice as many people admitting to doing coke does not necessarily mean twice as many people are actually doing it.

Um, ingredient? What, are we baking cupcakes or something? By the way, cocaine is FAR from being the *main* substance contained in coca leaves.

The BBC link you provided does not have any details on the survey questions. From the information on that page, it is impossible to determine really important things like frequency of use, amount used, and whether treatment has ever been sought for these individuals.

It is a serious error to conflate drug abuse with drug use. While law enforcement agencies might use "drug abuse" or "drug misuse" as a term to describe the use of any illicit substance, we don't have to be intellectually dishonest. Drug abuse is not the same thing as using an illegal drug. Period.

Yeah, me too. A speaker told us about Len Bias when I was in elementary school and it petrified me. I was left with the impression that it was instant death. And while I know that's not really true, I've never shaken my feelings about it.

Sure cocaine can lead to addiction. Sure it can be dangerous. But it can also be used in relatively safe ways that don't lead to addiction, a wrecked life, or financial problems.

Please be realistic and honest. You are making statements that are similar to things like: "stay away from tattoos and body piercings because they can lead to HIV and hepatitis, and you'll regret them later in life, just like everyone else does, because nobody will hire you when you look like a freak."

Cocaine is extracted from coca. It's not the main ingredient in coca. Coca has many traditional and industrial/medical uses beyond simply being processed into cocaine for illicit use.

Even if Bolivia were ramping up coca production simply to produce more cocaine and shove it straight up the noses of so many poor innocent American trust fund babies, I wouldn't really have a problem with it. US cold war and drug policy has raped that country over the past 40 years. If they can turn around and make some money off the dysfunctional and irrational drug policy in the US, good luck to 'em.

I have said it before and I will say it again...

I would rather have my friends use cocaine even if it is a foul and addictive drug that I dislike my friends doing, than to have them become addicted to Meth the ultimate in evil drugs.

You're right, there's plenty of differences between those two terms. Mainly that you can abuse plenty of legal drugs.

I'd really like to meet this casual cokehead of which you speak.

actually, all those lovely nerve-numbing drugs we use- lidocaine, benzocaine, even the novacaine needle that your dentist shoots in your mouth- all made from coca. it's not just for numbing up your face after blowing a line or two. and lidocaine isn't only used for nerve-blocking, it stops Pre-ventricular contractions [messed up heart-beats] and helps calm down laryngal spasms, especially on cats when you're trying to intubate them.

pretty much any drug you hear of ending in "caine" is derived from coca. and the medical profession, both human and animal, uses lots of them.
