Japanese schoolgirls everywhere are sleeping a little less easy since the discovery of Promachoteuthis sloani, a soft-bodied deep-sea squid recently discovered along an underwater mountain chain in the Atlantic.
The species, dubbed Promachoteuthis sloani, was caught along with around 50 other types of squid during trawls as deep as 1.2 miles (3 kilometers) by a Census of Marine Life team. The team, from the Norwegian-led MAR-ECO program, is investigating life along the world's ocean mountain ranges.
Bleeding-heart hippies such as myself can take comfort in knowing that, while humanity may be killing off species at an alarming rate, new species are being discovered as well, especially in the unexplored depths of the ocean.
