What would happen if the human race faced extinction? If, because of a worldwide infertility defect, we could no longer procreate? This question lies at the center of the director Alfonso Cuaron's (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Y tu Mama Tambien) new futureshock drama, Children of Men, coming to theaters this Christmas Day.
After the world 's youngest person dies at 18, the future of human birth hangs in the balance, sending the world into anarchy. Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine star as the care takers of humankind's final hopeone last woman who can give birth to save the human race.
Alfonso Cuaron is the most underrated director alive. Directing a Harry Potter movie didn't help him any; although Prisoner of Azkaban is the best by far.
Holy crappin' hell, you're telling me for once Australia got a movie months before America did?
JOY!
Children of Men has been and gone at the cinemas here yonks ago, and it's easily hands-down the best film of the year.
Alfonso Cuaron is fast becoming one of the best directors around, and Clive Owen and Chiwetal Ejiofor are fast becoming 2 of the best actors around.
Also, wierdly enough, apparently Emma Watson was the first choice to play Kee but couldn't due to scheduling conflicts. Is anyone else highly disturbed by the idea of a pregnant Hermione Granger running around in a bleak dystopian future?
This has been out in Australia for a while now. I saw it a few weeks ago.
I really liked it, myself.
Though part of that may have been due to a certain level of nostalgia: much of the first half of the movie is filmed in my old London haunts -- both near where I worked and where I lived.
Julianne Moore and Clive Owen share a kiss on an old pedestrian bridge in East London in the exact same spot my ex and I shared one of our kisses.
Aside from that, the music is great: Sigur Rós and Radiohead are both featured prominently; the costumes, effects and sets are really well-executed; and it was a film I enjoyed quite a bit.
