Show & Tell: Tokyo's "Stamina" Food
I was recently on a beat for Bizarre Magazine when I found myself in what is possibly the most heinous restaurant in Japan: Akidachi. Located in a labyrinth of small bars and Japanese style eateries near Shinjuku station, this batcave of horrors specializes in food that supposedly has aphrodisiac or “powerful” properties.
The most popular delicacy here is raw pig’s bollocks, which is apparently more potent than Viagra and lasts for several days. Also on the menu are turtle’s “hands,” which have the texture of sand and taste like a fish tank, frog sashimi (which is quite good...I’m told), frog soup and horse sashimi. To add insult to injury, large posters of copulating horses adorn the walls for inspiration.
Strangely enough, the place is often packed with people in business attire nonchalantly munching on skewered lizards and washing it all down with snake infused sake--which apparently induces a ravaging hard on for men, and is good for “overall stamina."
Some photos from my cell phone--lizard, frog sashimi, turtle's legs.
