Lotsa Museums Free in L.A. Tomorrow

This Sunday, October 1st in the Los Angeles area, twenty museums have agreed to open the doors to the public free of charge. Take advantage of this, Southern Californians; while there are some museums that are always free (such as the Getty), most are not.

The participating museums in the day event include:

Armory Center for the Arts
Autry National Center's Museum of the American West
California Heritage Museum
California Science Center
Craft and Folk Art Museum
Fowler Museum at UCLA
The Getty Center
Hammer Museum
Japanese American National Museum
Laguna Art Museum
Long Beach Museum of Art
Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
The Museum of Television & Radio
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA)
Museum of Tolerance
Norton Simon Museum
Orange County Center for Contemporary Art
Pacific Asia Museum
Skirball Cultural Center
Southwest Museum of the American Indian.

Of course, those broke non-posers will probably realize that most of the 20 participating museums are normally completely free (Getty Center, California Science Center, Armory Center, Fowler Museum, Southwest Museum), partially free (MOCA Pacific Design Center) or free on certain days or hours (Hammer Museum, Japanese American National Museum, Long Beach Museum of Art, LA County Museum of Art, Skirball Cultural Center, Norton Simon Museum, Pacific Asia Museum). Sadly, parking and special exhibits will still bleed you dry.

LA County Museum of Art: After 5 pm & the second Tuesday of each month, general admission to the galleries is free to all. LACMA's Free After Five is sponsored by Target.

UCLA Hammer Museum: Free for Museum members, students with ID, UCLA faculty and staff, and visitors 17 and under accompanied by an adult.
Free on Thursdays for all visitors

Japanese American National Museum: Free general admission every Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and every third Thursday of the month.

Long Beach Museum of Art: Every Friday is FREE thanks to generous support from the James Irvine Foundation

Norton Simon Museum: Admission is free for all visitors the first Friday of every month from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Skirball Cultural Center: All exhibitions are free to the public on Thursdays, 12:00-9:00 p.m.
Ruby Gallery exhibitions are free to the public.
All exhibitions are free for Skirball Members and Children under 12.
Admission to the core exhibition Visions and Values (includes admission to all exhibitions): Free on Thursdays

Pacific Asia Museum: Free admission every 4th Friday of the month.

But hey, if you want to fight insane traffic, large crowds, and pay special event parking prices at the museums this weekend, be my guest!

personally, i still think it's a great opportunity, especially to check out some of the lesser known museums with specific collections such as the craft and folk art museum (pictured) or the museum of tv and radio.
