Yesterday's Illustration, Today's Inspiration

Today's Inspiration is a blog about commercial illustrations of the 40's and 50's and the artists who made them and subsequently carved an aesthetic for the era. By compiling an archive of common artists' work, the blog pieces together the history, techniques, and biographies of relevant and mysterious illustrators. The site is a must-see for retro illustration fans.

The above illustration is by Lowell Hess. Check in at the blog's November 2005 posts for a fascinating story of how the blogger and fellow illustrator Leif Peng of Today's Inspiration tracked Mr. Hess down and pieced together his biography.

The dad driving in the illustration kind of reminds me of Hunter S. Thompson. biggrin This is how Ralph Steadman's work might have looked without LSD. The title should be Fear And Loathing Across America (typical lassez faire attitude of the times, just look at the junk falling off the back of the vehicle). Actually, I was just thinking how this image reminds me of similar ones in the World Book Encyclopedia set my mom used to have when she was a kid. I especially liked the illustrations of manufacturing processes with all the machinery illustrated connected by conveyor belts, all very automated and modern (kind of like a simplified version of How Things Work). Usually they'd be in tri-color with pink, blue and black. I wouldn't want to hijack your idea for this blog, but are pin-ups welcome (fitting for SG). Here are a couple by Jack Cole, a short-lived illustrator of the times:

I am a vintage/retro illustration freak. I love it. I love the loops, and curlies and the happy faces and the dark lips and the strong lines, and the innocence of it all. The camping scene is purely care-free, the family is all happy to be there and have some good, clean fun together. (And you're right, it does look like the Doc! biggrin)
The Jack Cole ones are innocent too...in the bombshell kind of way. I've never seen his work before; I really like it. Thanks for posting. kiss

Did I kill this thread? Sorry.

Those illustrations are so inspiring as a Graphic Designer.
