Mag's Breastfeeding Photo Is Too Titillating for Readers

A parenting magazine is at the center of a breastfeeding controversy after featuring a nursing mother on the cover of its August issue.

BabyTalk, a magazine catering to new mothers, received hundreds of letters in response to the photo, with many readers calling it offensive and disgusting.

One mother who didn't like the cover explains she was concerned about her 13-year-old son seeing it.

"I shredded it," said Gayle Ash, of Belton, Texas, in a telephone interview. "A breast is a breast - it's a sexual thing. He didn't need to see that."

Another woman, who’s in favor of breastfeeding, said she also wanted to protect her family from seeing unwanted breastage.

"I'm totally supportive of it - I just don't like the flashing," she said. "I don't want my son or husband to accidentally see a breast they didn't want to see."

Because, of course, they always tell her which breasts they do want to see.
The photo was meant to call attention to the current debate over breastfeeding in public. A recent poll found that 57 percent of Americans oppose public breastfeeding, while a new generation of mothers - "lactivists" - are advocating for a woman's right to whip 'em out whenever she needs to.

BabyTalk executive editor Lisa Moran said it's the first time a major U.S. parenting magazine has shown a woman's breast.

First of all - why didn't they just say it was an elbow? Babies suck on anything. Babies suck on walls if you approach at the right angle. Problem solved.

Second of all - someone already dropped the David Cross line, so reference that post.

Third of all - This is the most non-controversial controversy I've ever seen. This is worse than the Janet incedent, which was a non-incedent. Only in America does anyone freak out over something like this. If you're offended by this picture, you have issues. Maybe you were touched as a child, or beat as a child, or a combination of the two. Maybe you've had some abusive relationships and your view of sex and sexuality is horribly skewed. I don't know. But the problem isn't the perfectly natural, gentle, and innocent picture of a mother feeding her baby - it's you.

Fourth of all - "A breast is a breast - it's a sexual thing." Shut the fuck up. A breast is a "sexual thing" because people like this person freak out whenever they see one. It's only a big deal because people like this make it a big deal. If everyone walked around naked, would anyone care? No. The problem is that people insist on imposing these ridiculous, and artificial, standards, and then try to push the envelope as far as they can against them, and as a result people are totally hyper-sensitive. 100 years ago ankles were sexual - I don't see anyone throwing a fit when a woman wears sandals anymore. And apparently a man can do whatever he wants short of showing his ding-dong, because men rule the world. A man's breasts aren't sexual. I don't know who the fuck decided that arbitrary stipulation - I guess because someone decided to draw Adam with a fig leaf over his cash and prizes and not his chest. Whatever. Get over it and shut up.

This is the sort of thing that makes me embarrassed to be human. These people know that breasts can be used by babies to feed right? I think the people shocked and offended by this are the ones who get turned on by it. These parents are warping their children. When is this BS going to stop here in the US? It just keeps getting worse....

Mothers who consider a photo of breastfeeding to be "sexual" should be spending a bit more time looking inward and re-examining their own moral values than criticizing a magazine. Obviously, I'm not a woman so I don't know very much about these things, but you'd think that someone who has actually breastfed would recognize that there's nothing sexual about it.

I would never call breastfeeding a sexual act.

But birth, and breastfeeding can have everything to do with sexuality...even in terms of it being an "ecstatic" experience for some women. I've been reading endless breastfeeding and birthing books and there seem to be a fair number of women who experience totally normal feelings of pure ecstacy during said experiences.

That said, the women who think a breast is always sexual, or consider it flashing (wtf?!) are pretty loony in my opinion.

I think you really hit the nail on the head here. The real problem is that anything having to do with human sexuality is viewed by many as "sexual" (read: smutty and inappropriately erotic).

It's actually a picture of a baby being forced to kiss another baby's ass as part of a sadistic day-care frat hazing ritual.
BabyTalk...read it for the revealing investigative journalism.

The herd mentality of the masses never ceases to amaze and astound me, I would hope the picture isn't remotely sexual to the general populace if it is then I think that just shows a bigger problem.

"I'm totally supportive of it - I just don't like the flashing," she said. "I don't want my son or husband to accidentally see a breast they didn't want to see."

Am I the only one who thinks that's just funny 'cause let's face it breasts are pretty much everywhere you look now, all you have to do is pick up any magazine or just look at the nearest billboard and you'll see them. Personally I think it's perfectly acceptable for women to breast feed their babies in public and if anyone gets some sort of sexual kick out of it then I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks they probably need a good slap.

If there's any reason to hide that breast, it's because that kid looks like he's had enough already.

well.

so the july-august issue of "Mothering" magazine also sports a cover photo of a woman breastfeeding. i don't think they've had any trouble.

actually they did have quite a bit of trouble. it was pulled from super market and bookstore shelves and store workers refused to stock it until a group of Mothering readers complained to the store owners.

OMFG, its a baby magazine, and the picture artistic more than sexual in anyway. I hate bitches that cant handle that their unhappy with their tits.... one of the quotes said the husband was offended... YEAH RIGHT, he probably took the magazine and stashed it on his side of the bed so his wife "didnt have to see it" Boobs are boobs, theyre everywhere, some are better than others, and that baby was enjoying those, what is wrong with it?
