Adventures in Unnecessary Movie Remakes

It's official: Hollywood has run out of ideas. Why else remake a film that isn’t that old - 1987's "Adventures in Babysitting"?

Yes, the beloved film starring Elizabeth Shue, Keith Coogan and a weirdly blond Vincent D’Onofrio is getting the redo treatment, this time with former Cosby kid Raven Symone in the title role.

What’s next? "Sixteen Candles"? "Three Amigos"?

"Adventures" isn’t the only Reagan-era movie being pimped out for a new generation. Other remakes currently being readied include: "Porky’s," "The Stepfather", "Red Sonja", "The Hitcher" and "All of Me."

Eighties movies aside, even acknowledged classics aren't safe from the remake frenzy. Last month, the Weinstein brothers announced plans to remake Akira Kurosawa's 1954 masterpiece "The Seven Samurai."

I wouldn't mind seeing a Red Sonja remake...

But I'm not sure about the others.

I'm all for a C Thomas Howelless Hitcher. Let's hope Rutger's up for it.

Oh, come on!! they're still making sequels off the original! With Hauer!! The last one starred that Wuherererer or whatever chick.

But this "Adventures"... it stars Raven? So this is the "black" "Adventures in Babysitting. Like the remake of The Honeymooners. When is it that we all get past this separatist Hollywood and just make crappy movies that no race really wants to see?

How can "Adventures in Babysitting" have a titular character? Is she playing the adventure?

Also, I'd love to see a new Red Sonya movie - it's not like we're ever going to see that Arnold/Vin Conan that I was promised.

i totally read that as "former kid Raven Symone" (my brain skipped over 'Cosby') and my immediate thought was "sad, a little mean, but oh so true"

This may be a little off topic, but wasn't Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In The Name Of The Father, Get Rich Or Die Trying) going to remake Kurosawa's Ikiru? I'd heard that Tom Hanks was set to star in it (oh, the humanity). I read a little about it on IMDB but have just done a quick search and could find nothing on the project. Perhaps people have come to their seneses. More likely, the funding just wasn't there.

News first surfaced about that in October 2004. Last thing I saw or heard about it was last July - it was still a go, but Sheridan was directing something else first. Haven't heard anything since. It could have died a painless development death.
