Fashion Suicide (May 26): Knit Happens

It seemed like the female sex had gone all domestic throughout the city today. Every place I turned on this delicate afternoon, there was a Happy Hobbyist Homemaker ready to smile for the camera. Easy-Bake, easy pickings, sayest I.

Pat-a-Vegan-Cake

I'm a vegan of habit. Each and every Thursday afternoon, I find myself running into Red Bamboo, not only for their delicious vegan soul food, but also for a sampling of the very best piece of vegan cake ever created. I mean it; we're talking "religiously transcendental" good cake, here.

I've been following this ritual almost every Thursday for over a year now. Why Thursdays, you ask? Because ever Thursday morning a lovely little vegan baking goddess drives her minivan from Philly, full of home-baked goodness, and distributes them throughout vegetarian restaurants in the city (I'd say it's quite a racket she's got there, but it's hard to accuse fellow vegetarians of being capitalist pigs...because, you know, we don't eat pigs, and you are what you eat, and OK, I'll stop now). So I'd only heard of this soy-patron saint from afar, until today, when I fortunately arrived for lunch just a bit earlier than normal and captured her dropoff in action.

So, not only can she bake, but she can style herself too! Here, she's taken a regular blazer from H&M (or is that "Ahem"), and sloppily stitched colorful threading into it. This, along with her mixtures of yellow and green and her accompanying smile, really take the cake.

Japanese Cowgirl! (I Thought It Was a Sexual Position, Too, but It's Not)

I enjoy this girl's comforting southern ranch look. She made the gloves on her own after seeing them being sold in stores for far too much money – probably by some capitalist pigs. I envy people who can knit, since it's the sort of homegrown sensibility that contrasts with my tending to pay a good 20 bucks for these sorts of gloves.

Money, Labor, Money: More from The Knitting Factory

Much like a Rapunzel of yarn, this girl's goal was to knit one long rope that would stretch thoughout the park, using that entire ball of yarn. Unfortunately for this fairy-tale-esque dream, I didn't have the extra couple of hours to spare to see if her goal was achieved. But like all such tales, we can hope and assume they come true, right?

I did, however, have enough time to capture this one singular moment pictured above. With her homemade skirt, the Chuck Taylors coated in glitter, and a shirt tweaked to fit her frame just right, how could anyone not love this D.I.Y. look?

And How Are You? Harajuku!

What caught my eye about this particularly plaintive knitter was the dark, rich colors in her outfit. The red dress can be found at American Apparel, and can be worn as a dress or a shirt. And what with the holiday weekend approaching, that's good old American Versatility, I suppose.

I also liked her haircut. I see a lot of Japanese girls with their bangs cut from the back of the mane and proelled forward. Arguably, the one thing the whole Gwen Stefani renaissance of a few years back did right was to expose us to Japanese street style. You see this haircut more often now than ever before, and it's so cute!

God! those girls make me want to build my own furniture so bad. Good sturdy furniture. Furniture you could do calisthenics on.

If you are ever in the Bay Area (which could happen considering your skill as a DJ), Millenium is my favorite over priced vegetarian restaurant (many, many vegan entrees, unbelievable food)....
