Lost in Translation: "Boo" means "Yay" in French

Awww, we're almost on the verge of feeling bad for Sofia Coppola, whom we'd normally refer to as "director Sofia Coppola" after her star-making support for actress Scarlett Johansson in 2003's Lost in Translation, but, it seems, the former Spike Jonze-flame and current Francis Ford Coppola-daughter might not warrant such grandiose titleage after all.

You see, the French have booed her most recent film, the Kirsten Dunst-starring Marie-Antoinette, at its recent premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Mercilessly. (And, no, that's not a French-language pun on "thank you." Please. We have standards in our writing, much like we used to assume that Coppola had standards in her directing.)

It had been expected to be a strong contender for the Palme d'Or as the festival begins the countdown towards Sunday's top award.

Coppola, who made the widely acclaimed "Lost in Translation", is seen as a gifted director capable of subtle, poetic work on the screen.

But, despite sumptuous sets and costumes and a rollicking rock'n'roll soundtrack, the film is a disappointing and unconvincing story that prompted sniggers at points, and boos which drowned out the scattered applause at the end.

Not to mention they've really been booing everything this year. The only American film thus far I haven't heard about being booed is Fast Food Nation.

Lost in Translation was a very good movie. I think she gets about three free fuck ups for that.

Virgin Suicides was flawless.
Lost In Translation was flawless.
I personally don't think Kirsten Dunst has the chops to play Marie Antoinette, maybe that's what's wrong with it.

I saw the preview for this; the rock music just makes it funny.. I'm not sure it's supposed to.

Sophia Coppola is a hack who got lucky with two great actors in Lost in Translation. Im not surprised in the least that this movie bombed.

And she ruined Godfather III, man.

Well she got lucky twice, because Virgin Suicides was really good.

And incidentally, I wasn't that keen on Lost in Translation.

I kind of hated Virgin Suicides. Kind of a lot.

I just don't get why people like him. He plays the same character in every one of his movies. I mean, I'm ugly and insecure, but you don't see me getting paid for it.
whatever

Virgin Suicides was an insult to the book. Lost in Translation was a couple of master performers at work.

At least we agree that Kirsten Dunst is the acting equivalent to bleeding gum residue.

From rogerebert.com:

As you’re reading this, do you have the impression that Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette” was booed here at Cannes? You can be excused for that impression, because the booing at the Wednesday morning press screening was widely reported, and I am one of those responsible, although I did not boo. Drudge headlined the boos and linked to a story in Variety saying they had “a Gallic accent,” leading to my speculations yesterday about whether “boo” sounds differently in French and English.

But now let’s step back and be fair. Yes, there was booing. But I was present at the screening and would guess not more than five people, maybe 10, booed. Many others applauded. Booing is always shocking to North American critics; I am not sure I have heard booing more than once or twice in all my years at the Toronto, Sundance, Telluride, Chicago, Montreal or New York festivals. In Europe, they boo all the time, sometimes because they think a film is bad, sometimes because it is (according to them) politically incorrect.

He goes on to say that the movie has mostly been well-received by French critics. And it should be noted that his impressions of the movie were not overall favorable; he said that it "doesn't fail, but neither does it triumph."

Movie looks really interesting and its sweet she used New Order in the trailer.

Shes obviously got bigger balls than people are comfy with.

If its a big mess it will be the type of big mess only over the top artists make.

Fuck em Sophia, do what you want.
