Canada's Liberals Get Smoked

Canadian legislation to legalize small amounts of marijuana—a bill drafted by the former liberal government (which lost elections in January)—will not be reintroduced when the new, Conservative Parliament sits today. Prime Minister Stephen Harper wants Canada and the rest of the world to know that he's no dope. There's a new sheriff in Ottawa, and crime fighting is top priority.

"We are going to hold criminals to account," said Harper. "This government will send a strong message to criminals: If you do a serious crime, you're going to start doing serious time."

He vowed to keep his campaign pledge to demand tougher sentences for gun and drug offenses and won prolonged applause for his campaign promises to crack down on parole and do away with mandatory supervision, the practice of releasing most convicts after two-thirds of their sentences.

Harper also promised to get tough on child pornography and improve the national databank of DNA samples of convicted criminals.

Its great that although it may not become legal.....weed is still not considered by anyone to be a crime here.
So....Doing a serious crime, still wont apply

I like how he responds to a question about a bill that would make something that is illegal, legal, by saying that he's going to crack down on criminals. Two steps forward three steps back, good luck up there guys.

A side note.....this is the first time I voted for what I truly believed was the "lesser of two evils"
I voted conservative....not b/c I am conservative, but b/c (unlike the liberals in the East) I actually realized how FUCKED UP the current people in power were.
There had to be a change....and we have to live with the consequences of getting the corrupt out, while living with the ideals that don't run with my own
whatever

And that, my friends, is why we have a Conservative minority. People didn't vote Conservative because they like them... They voted Conservative because of the stupid partisan hackery that ran rampant throughout the campaign.

People were too busy getting their dicks in a twist over possible Liberal corruption to actually listen to the shit the Cons were spewing.

Sigh.

Really, I have this horrid feeling like Harper is thinking, "What else can I do to make my ass more inviing to Bush?"

Be steadfast Canada, the world can hardly handle 1 US.

I don't think Canada is anywhere close to where the USA is. Although the government is called Conservative, it's still left of the Democrats in the States, even though I'm sure Stephen Harper would want to make it less so.

And I think it's awesome that the Tories are balanced by the Liberals and the NDP... because if they weren't, I'd have to consider moving. Especially since Alberta kicked all of the Grits/NDPs out.

As for the idea of corruption... this is the cost of letting that shit out. If you're going to be a corrupt gov't, do better to hide it from the people.

...

I don't support the Grits or the Tories, though. Family Values politics (See USA) are bullshit, and creepy to me. Oh so creepy...

Dear God:
Please let Stephen Harper be the first 21th century Prime Minister to be assasinated.

And please give us world peace.

Amen.

I don't know why, but it feels good to see Canadians irritated over politics like this.

Fuck the Conservatives , Id still much prefer the Liberals to these homophobic assholes. Increasing sentences does not make this country a better place for anyone. Fuck I think I need a J to calm myself down.

Also its nice to see some Canadian news on the wire.
