If You Can't Stand the Heat

Actor and musician Isaac Hayes has quit as South Park's voice of Chef, citing what he perceives to be the show's growing religious intolerance.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians."

I could totally see Matt and Trey writing an episode where Chef goes crazy, starts his own cult and tries to convert the boys. It ends with him receiving a life sentence to the mental hospital when he kills Kenny.

Of course, they'd have to get a damn good Isaac Hayes impersonator first, but that can't be too hard.

BTW, Matt, Trey, if you use this idea, I expect some royalties. wink

I mean, if anyone thought Team America was an endorsement of Bush's foreign policy, I dont' know what to say to you.

Their articulation of Bush's foreign policy is the only discernable ethos in the whole movie, and it doesn't fit into the plot in a way that calls criticism to it. You can say "It's satire they didn't mean it," but I didn't get that impression at all; neither did many professional movie critics.

Why can't people just watch it, and fucking enjoy it?

It's called a sense of fucking humour.

People like you a whole lot better if you have one.

Having a sense of humour and having an opinion are not mutually exclusive - but having an opinion sometimes means you don't find some things funny... even if people don't like you.

Everyone has opinions... It's just when you become a pain in the ass to everyone who disagrees with you on it that you become a fascist... For example, giving Matt and Trey a hard time for anything they do is exercising your opinion on someone else.

They're just comically mocking those who enter the spotlight, all in good light...

So thus, I prefer to be associated who have a "Universal Sense of Humour". You know, the type of person who finds humour in everything and anything?

Yeah, they're the best... biggrin

Wow, you're really clever!

Nah, strike that... but you do seem incredibly insecure about your own "opinions" (just a tad hero-worshipful of trey and matt?) if you have to resort to calling me a fascist smile

Do you want to be an astronaut or a fireman when you're all gwowed up?

I wasn't calling you fascist.

Or... was I...

Yeah, haha! I was...

Or...

Was I?

I'm far from grown up dude, but if I had to choose between fireman and astronaut, I'd choose astronaut... Why? Because the position for playing with lots of "big hoses" all day seems to be "filled" by you.

wink kiss biggrin

And naw, I wasn't calling you a fascist.

(Awfully moody... What are you, a scientologist or something?)

ACTUALLY, upon further reflection, isn't one of the main ideals of the liberal mindset that all people are equal and every race, religion, culture, and so on should receive respect?

And if liberal mindset really IS all inclusive, then why is there so much bias against Christianity? If you say that everyone is equal and deserves respect, except for ______, well then, isn't that excluding someone, and therefore a flaw in the logic?

There is a LOT of anti-Christian sentiment here, which seems to defeat the purpose of ideas like "equal", "tolerance," and "all-inclusive." Whether or not you agree with Christians or Christianity, they have the right to believe what they want.

If all of this is so...then wouldn't making fun of all of the forementioned differences be the opposite of liberal? Does that mean that South Park is not necessarily conservative, but more like... "anti-liberal?"

Here's a novel idea...people could just STOP making fun of all religion? Instead of making fun of one, two, or all of them?

Is that too radical a thought - that we just all make a concerted effort to be more respectful and tolerant in the REAL sense? It seems like people can talk the talk but can't REALLY walk the walk in that aspect.

Hmmm, the mind truly boggles. shocked

It's a nice idea, but without viewpoints there isn't diversity. I think it's how that viewpoint is defended (ie guns, legislation, illegal wars etc...)

However, I was just wondering if anyone else seem to think that southpark was pretending to be something it's not - and I got my answer! biggrin

Peace smile

South Park doesn't claim to be anything. They just poke fun at whatever the fuck they wanna poke fun at. Not choosing sides, just mocking lots of stuff that they find ridiculous.

They do a lot of spoofing on politics, but there are way more non-political episodes in South Park than the latter...

Matt and Trey are great guys, really nice, really smart, really friendly...

But come on people, who didn't want to make fun of a "religion" based on space-ships, and alien-spirits, and the almighty dollar?!

South Park has always taken both sides of any argument and make extreme caricatures out of them, thus making both sides look equally idiotic for taking their views so seriously.

Lameness! Matt Stone's right on, too. You can't be faithful to a show for years when they're making fun of every other religion, and then get your knickers all in a twist when they do a show about yours.
